Beechwood edges RHS 34-25
in state semifinals Friday
|
The season came to an end for the Russellville Panthers Friday as Coach John Myers’ team was edged by visiting Beechwood 34-25. The Tigers came into the game as a three-touchdown favorite, but the Panthers had opportunities to win. Two crucial gambles went against the Panthers. Holder Jason Mitchell decided to run the ball after the second RHS touchdown instead of letting Milam Watkins kick the tying extra point. His run was stopped. In the fourth quarter, Myers decided to go for it on fourth and four from the RHS 32. Jaylin McMurry’s pass to Mitchell failed, and Beechwood scored the clinching TD on that short field. Panther Josh Bigbee ran for 196 yards on 16 carries on the way to three TDs. Bryson Thomas and McMurry also scored. The Panthers, who played a school record nine home games, finished 11-3. Beechwood, which goes to the state finals with a 13-1 record, was led by Brett Slusher, who moved to running back from receiver after an injury to star rusher Ethan Stringer. He finished with 106 yards and three TDs.

State semifinals begin at 6 tonight
|
A rare 6 p.m. start will help determine a state finalist early tonight when the Russellville Panthers (11-2) entertain Beechwood (12-1) in the Class 1A state semifinals. Beechwood, which is located in Northern Kentucky not far from Cincinnati, is a traditional power in what used to be known as Class A football, just as are the Panthers. Coach Nolan Rash’s Tigers are seeking the program’s 12th state championship. They feature a balanced attack with running back Ethan Stringer, quarterback Kyle Fieger, and receiver Brett Slusher all having over 1,000 yards in their specialty. Coach John Myers’ Panthers rely heavily on the run, but the passing game was effective in a blowout of Bethlehem for the regional championship with quarterback Jaylin McMurry hitting running back Josh Bigbee on two long touchdown passes. A win would be Myers’ 100th. The game will be broadcast on WRUS (610 AM) and the internet with John Brett Reynolds & Alex Watkins calling the action.

Panthers hold off Campbellsville,
advance to regional finals
|
After giving up the lead, the Russellville Panthers came back to beat visiting Campbellsville 38-36 Friday in the Class 1A Regional semifinals. Quarterback Jaylin McMurry scored both the clinching touchdown and two point conversion with 7:20 remaining, and Coach John Myers' team held on. A key play found holder Jason Mitchell converting a pass to Jordan Blick on a 2-pointer to put the Panthers up 30-29. Mitchell, who might have been the goat had the Panthers lost because of repeated holding penalties, also caught a 56-yard pass from McMurry after the Eagles had taken the lead. Josh Bigbee joined McMurry in rushing for over 100 yards, but Bigbee and Johnny Drumgole were injured most of the second half. T.K. Hampton played a key role in stopping a Campbellsville drive late in the game. The Panthers will entertain Bardstown Bethlehem in next week's regional finals, also at Rhea Stadium. It's the Panthers' sixth trip to the regional finals in nine seasons.
