The 30th annual Dr.  Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Unity Walk Celebration will be held this Friday morning, Jan. 16. The public is invited to participate in the walk and in the program which will follow.

The walk is scheduled to begin at 8:15 at the historic Bank Street AME Church at 564 East Fifth Street in Russellville. Walkers will proceed around Carrico Square and on to the Historic Old Logan County Courthouse where the program will be held in the upstairs courtroom.

This year’s theme will be “Reconstruction Revisited.”

“We encourage everyone to continue in efforts to strengthen our education presentation experience for all our students, our parents and community,” says Marvinia Benton Neblett, who joins her husband Charles in planning the event each year.

“We are asking for everyone’s attendance including parents, employees, retired teachers, pastors, deacons, representatives of churches, businesses, civic organizations, government, elected officials, banks, media, fire/police, health departments, youth/students and all persons to walk with us.”

Those who do not want to walk are still invited to attend the program.

Although, as usual, the observance is planned on a Friday instead of the Monday when schools are dismissed to observe Martin Luther King Day, Mrs. Neblett notes, “Some schools will give students an excused absence if their parents picks their children up from school, take them to the walk and program, and return them to school following the event.”

Community Projects, Inc. President Charles Neblett says, “We are honored to have community involvement that supports all educational opportunities that are beneficial to our youth.”
