Wharton, Morris swim well at state

Lilly Morris and Riley Wharton, who became the first swimmers ever to represent LCHS at the KHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championships, competed this past week in Louisville with Wharton cutting over a second off his time, placing first in his heat, and ending 29th overall. Morris swam against the best as an 8th grader and placed 31st.Athletic Director Greg Howard says, "Congrats to these wonderful student-athletes for their efforts and representing our county well! A job well done by mother and coach, Rachelle Wharton!"

Regional programs being reprinted

A series of mistakes on the Logan County Lady Cougars page of the Fourth Region Girls Basketball Tournament's printed program is resulting in its being reprinted. The leader of the group selling the programs told The LoJo that anyone who brings back a program purchased Sunday can turn it in when the Lady Cougars play in the semifinals Friday and will get a new one in return.

Trey Matthews of RHS wins regional

award from athletic directors

Russellvile High School football lineman Trey Matthews is the male recipient of the 4th Region Policy Board Scholarship, according to Warren Central Athletic Director Chase Goff. The female recipient is Keylee Stalcup of Cumberland County. They each will be honored at halftime of this week's regional finals basketball games. All 17 of the schools in the region were allowed to nominate a boy and a girl, and 13 of them submitted applications.

Russellville draws Russell County

The Russellville Panthers will play Wednesday, March 2, at 8 p.m. vs. Russell County in the Fourth Region Tournament at Diddle Area. Athletic Director Calvin Head says pre-sale tickets will be available in the RHS front office starting Monday for $6. Tickets at the door will be $8. Parking will be $5.

Regional tickets on sale today at LCHS

From LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard: The Logan County Lady Cougars will start play in the 4th Region Tournament this Sunday, Feb. 28 against Allen County at 3 p.m. Logan County High School will be selling advanced tickets Saturday from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. in the front lobby. Come out and get your advanced tickets for $6. They will be $8 at the gate.

Lady Cougars to play AC-S Sunday

The Logan County Lady Cougars have drawn into a very tough bracket in the Fourth Region Tournament. Coach Finley Baird's 13th District champs (21-8) will play Allen County-Scottsville (25-4) at 3 p.m. Sunday at Diddle Arena. Also in their bracket are Bowling Green (26-4) and Russell County (22-6) for a combined record of 94-22. The four teams in the lower bracket are a combined 63-54.

Lovan scores 45 as F-S edges

RHS 78-73 for district title

Franklin-Simpson’s Tavin Lovan scored 20 of his 45 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Wildcats to a 78-73 win over host Russellville in the finals of the 13th District Tournament Friday. The Panthers had roared back from a 70-58 deficit halfway through the quarter before going on a 13-0 run. Freshman Jacob Naylor hit a 3-pointer and two free throws in the run, which ended with Jason Mitchell’s 3-point play. The last RHS lead came on a goal by Shon Kees via Pedro Bradshaw assist. Lovan then scored the game’s final five points. He was 12 of 12 at the line in the fourth quarter. Franklin was 28 of 37 on free throws for the game with RHS only 13 of 22. Bradshaw finished with 17 points, Naylor 16, Mitchell 15 and Paul Jones 10. The standing room-only crowd turned into a sellout. The draw for next week’s regional pairings will be held Saturday night.

Lady Cougars win 3rd straight

district title, 46-33 over Franklin

Brooke Barnes had a sensational first half, Torrie Pollard dominated the final few minutes and Jessica Hines provided much needed relief off the bench, as the Logan County Lady Cougars won their third straight 13th District championship Thursday, beating Franklin-Simpson 46-33 at Jim Young Gymnasium. Barnes, who usually gets her points in the paint, hit 7 of 9 first-half shots from double-figure feet for 16 points to give Coach Finley Baird’s team a 20-17 halftime lead. Franklin trailed only 35-31 when Ann-Meguiar Bouldin made a steal and hit a reverse layup for LCHS. Pollard then scored 6 straight points in the final three minutes, and Cierra Johnson drew a charge to make the final margin much bigger than the game had been played. Barnes finished with 18 points, Pollard 11 and Hines 7. Osheonna Baker scored 16 and Tristany Lunsford 10 for Coach David Clark’s Lady Cats.

Aeron Smith, UTM off to strong start

Former Logan County softball player Aeron Smith made a game-saving tag in the bottom of the ninth inning against UT-Chattanooga Tuesday, and Martin won on to win the game in 10 innings. Smith, who was all-district as a seventh grader for the Lady Cougars, played her high school ball at Greenwood where she was the catcher on an undefeated state championship team. UTM is 8-2 and off to its best start since 1991, according to her dad, Tim Smith.

Panthers beat Cougars 81-63

Russellville went on a 16-0 run midway through the third quarter on the way to an 81-63 win over the visiting Logan County Cougars in the 13th District Tournament Tuesday. Cougar Lorenzo Garcia had hit two free throws to bring his point total to 17 before the Panthers began that run. RHS led 63-45 after three quarters, and Pedro Bradshaw already had 23 points and Jason Mitchell 16. Bradshaw finished with 26 points, Mitchell 22 and freshman Jacob Naylor 18. Dalton Furlow led the Cougars (10-14) with 19 points. Coach Phil Todd’s Panthers (18-6) will meet Franklin-Simpson (23-4) in Friday’s 8 p.m. championship game.

F-S ends Lady Panther season

36-29 in 13th District opener

Franklin's Lady Cats dominated the boards and on defense in beating host Russellville 36-29 in an opening round game of the 13th District Tournament Tuesday. The Lady Cougars had scored only three points in each quarter--all by Devonya Bryant--until six minutes remained in the third quarter. Still Coach Calvin Head's team trailed only 15-9. They tied it at 15-15 on two free throws by Deshala LeBlanc Tristany Lunsford immediately hit a 3-pointer for Franklin-Simpson and RHS never tied it again, although Bryant brought the home team to within three twice late. Jessie Bellar & Kourtne Turner each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Coach David Clark's Lady Cats out-rebounded the Lady Panthers 46-25, led by Bellar and Turner. Bryant had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. LeBlanc (7) and Loreal Cheaney (6) scored the rest of the RHS points. Bellar scored 14 and Osheonna Baker 12 for F-S. Russellville finished 13-13. F-S (10-17) plays Logan County (20-8) in the finals Thursday at 7.

Lady Cougars hold off Todd

Central in district overtime

Cierra Johnson & Torrie Pollard combined to hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 50 seconds to seal a 69-61 overtime victory for the Logan County Lady Cougars in the opening round of the 13th District Tournament at RHS Monday. Todd's Jayde Robinson had scored on an inbounds pass from Tara Walters at the regulation buzzer to send the game into OT. Pollard scored 22 points, Rachel Barnett 17, Johnson 14 and Brooke Barnes 10 to lead Coach Finley Baird's team to a spot in Thursday's finals and next week's regional tournament. Alexis O'Daniel hit six 3-pointers for 18 points for Todd while Liza Brown hit four on the way to 14 points. Loreal Cheaney named all-region

Junior Loreal Cheaney of Russellville has been named third team All Fourth Region, Coach Calvin Head Has announced. Despite having a 19-8 record and four players with double-figure scoring averages, the Logan County Lady Cougars were shut out again this year. Brad Bonds, who coach Allen County-Scottsville to the state finals last year, is Coach of the Year. Bree Glover, who is coached by Justin Stinson at Glasgow, leads the all-stars.

Bruner pitches in 2nd WKU game

Even though his team is loaded with experienced pitchers, freshman Caleb Bruner of Logan County was called on to pitch for the WKU Hilltoppers in the second game of the season Saturday. When starter Cody Coll couldn’t get out of the third inning against visiting Youngstown State, Coach John Pawlowski started bringing relievers to the mound. In the role of setup man, Bruner pitched the eighth inning giving up one run on two hits while getting three of the five batters he faced out. He threw strikes on 14 of his 18 pitches. The Toppers tied the score in that inning, but closer Logan Weins took the loss in the 10th inning. WKU took the series 2-1.

Panthers put on offensive showcase

in regular season-ending win

Jason Mitchell hit three 3-pointers and Micah Naylor while three teammates joined them in double figures as Coach Phil Todd’s Russellville Panthers put on an offensive display in beating Butler County 88-57. Pedro Bradshaw scored 21, Mitchell 17, Jacob Naylor & Jaylin McMurry 11 each and Micah Naylor 10 with starter Paul Jones adding 8. Elijah Kemp, Deshawn Mason, Hunter Armistead, Jacolbie Mason & Devin Quarles also scored. Football star Rex Henderson led the Bears with 16 and Bailey Anderson added 11.The Panthers finished their regular season with a 17-6 record.

Lady Panthers win season finale

Three Lady Panthers finished in double figures and six others scored as Russellville ended its regular season with a 61-39 win at Dawson Springs Friday. Loreal Cheaney scored 16,Davonya Bryant 13, and Deshala LeBlanc 10. Also scoring were Addie Hendley, Gabbi Poirier, Jalonda Wells, Reagan Wilkerson, Carleigh Phillips & Brooklyn Ray. Brooklyn Cotton led Dawson Springs with 11.Coach Calvin Head’s team’s record improved to 13-12.

LCHS archers qualify for state

Logan County archers Taylor Haley, Kaitlyn Foster, and Bethany Pearson have qualified for the Individual State Tournament in Midway on March 6, according to Athletic Director Greg Howard.

Famous Idaho Potato bringing

6-ton potato to Logan County

The Big Show, which featured huge vegetables, was a staple of the Logan County Tobacco Festival for many years. On April 19, a six-ton potato will be in Logan County. According to Concerned Citizens Executive Director Dorris Vick, a six-ton model of the Famous Idaho Potato will bring its tour to Russellville on the way to Louisville. It will be free to view, but those attending will be asked to sign a big board. Famous Idaho Potato will donate up to $500 to Concerned Citizens, based on $1 per signature. Comedy Queen of Bingo to be

presented as dinner theatre

The Lady in Red Players Dinner Theatre will present the comedy Queen of Bingo at the 4th Street Theater in Russellville Friday, Feb. 26, and the following evening. A lasagna dinner catered by Colonial Inn will begin at 5:30 p.m. each night with the performance at 7. Darlene Gooch says the play is reminiscent of Greater Tuna. Tickets are $20 each and are on sale at the 4th Street Theater through Feb. 24. They can be ordered by calling 270-726-1303 or on Facebook. Ticket delivery is available.

Adairville softball, baseball

signups underway at city hall

Registration for Spring/Summer Ball at Adairville Community Park is underway until Feb. 22. Leagues are organizing for tee ball, coach pitch baseball, and three age groups of softball. Registration will be held this Tuesday and Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Adairville City Hall. Forms can also be turned in to city hall weekdays. Wharton, Morris qualify for state swim

A pair of Logan County swimmers qualified for the state tournament as a result of their performance in the regional swim meet at Owensboro Saturday. Sophomore Riley Wharton made in the boys 100 Breaststroke and eighth grader Lily Morris in the girls 100 backstroke. They will compete in Louisville Feb. 25-27, according to Athletic Director Greg Howard. Rachelle Wharton is the coach.

City schools closed again Monday

From Superintendent Leon Smith: While we were hoping to wait until Monday morning to make a call, road conditions and our parking lots are very slick and hazardous. Without daylight Mr. Myers and I do not believe we will get enough melt for safe travel tomorrow morning.  Therefore, there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, Feb. 15, in Russellville Independent Schools. We will see you on Tuesday. Hopefully this will be the last day we miss this school year. Enjoy your night and Monday off!

Road crews prep for snow

The National Weather Service has put the Kentucky Transportation's District 3 area under a winter storm warning until 9 a.m. Monday. District 3 crews have been out patrolling and salting in some areas since before sunrise to prep the roads before the main part of the storm reaches the district, says spokesman Wes Watt. The heaviest snow is expected to arrive after 9 a.m. and continue through the night. Roads are mainly clear, but motorists need to be aware conditions are expected to worsen as the day goes forward. Allow extra travel time and use caution for those who have to out today. Crews will be out in force to keep the roads as clear as they can as fast as they can.

Overdose Prevention training offered

Overdose Prevention training using Naloxone is being offered March 23 from 9-11 a.m. at the Logan County Extension Office. It’s for first responders, law enforcement, medical providers and concerned citizens in Logan, Butler and Simpson counties are welcome. To register, call Kathy Thweatt at 270-726-8341, extension 117. Free Naloxone kits will be provided on a limited basis. It is sponsored by Barren River District Health Department, Kentucky Harm Reduction Coalition, and Butler, Logan and Simpson KY-ASAP.

RHS considers resuming JROTC program

RJSHS is considering bringing back the JROTC program! Russellville Principal Kim McDaniel is currently taking names of 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students who might be interested in participating in the military training program. She says, “Currently, we are surveying to determine how much interest there may be for yet again a great potential opportunity for our students. There will be an ‘I am interested’ signup document in the front office. Please get your name on that list as soon as possible!'”

Logan County Schools will be closed Wednesday because of snow and ice, WRUS has announced. Todd County Schools had made the announcement earlier.

WKU closed today for snow

Monday's snow has canceled school Tuesday in Russellville, Logan County, Russellville Christian School, SKYCTC, and Warren, Simpson, Todd and Butler counties. Daymar College's Russellville campus is open with classes still on. WKU's Bowling Green campuses are open.

Nathan Thompson named CBA veep

Nathan Thompson, who is to be inducted into the Russellville Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame tonight, has been named vice president and director of player development of the Central Athletic Association, a league in which he coached the Bowling Green Hornets to the championship last year. The induction ceremony between games of the Clash of the Cats will be held at RHS and hear live on WRUS.

Rand Paul ends presidential bid

No Russellvillian will be living in the White House in the foreseeable future. Sen. Rand Paul of Bowling Green suspended his campaign Wednesday, following a fifth place finish in Republican caucses in Iowa Monday. He placed behind senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, second place businessman Donald Trump and surgeon Dr. Ben Carson. Paul's wife, Kelley Ashby Paul, is a graduate of Russellville High School and made numerous appearances on national television shows during the campaign. Dr. Paul says he will concentrate on winning a second term in the U.S. Senate. If he is the Republican nominee, he is expected to face a serious Democratic challenge from Lexington Mayor Jim Gray, formerly of Glasgow.

Middle school tourney still on

The Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament will be played as scheduled tonight, Athletic Director Greg Howard. "After looking at radar and the timelines a decision has been made to carry on." The girls game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at LCHS. For more information on the tournament, see the story in the Sports section of The LoJo.

Lady Cougars get revenge in

grand style, double score on Caverna

Talk about avenging a loss! Early in the season, Caverna beat the Logan County Lady Cougars 71-57. Monday at LCHS, Coach Finley Baird’s Lady Cougars crushed the Lady Colonels 71-35. Four Logan Ladies were in double figures—Rachel Barnett with 15, Taleia Mason & Brooke Barnes with 14 each, and Torrie Pollard with 11. Six other Lady Cougars—Ann-Meguiar Bouldin, Jessica Hines, Karrah Cron, Cierra Johnson, Brittany Garrett & Jamica Key—also scored with Key hitting 3 of 4 shots. Johnson and Mason added 6 assists and 3 steals each, Barnett pulled down 8 rebounds, and Barnes blocked 3 shots. The Lady Cougars are now 17-4 and have won 13 of their last 14 games.
