Bradshaw commits to play for Belmont

\Russellville High basketball star Pedro Bradshaw told a library filled with friends, family, teachers, teammates and media Thursday afternoon that he plans to play collegiately for Belmont University in Nashville. He cited his belief in legendary Bruins coach Rick Byrd, whom Bradshaw twice called "Hall of Fame coach." He said Belmont is a "great fit" for him. "I can get a good degree, a chance to play early, and the opportunity to develop into my dream of playing professionally," he said. He also said it will allow his grandparents who have raised him, Ricky Rogers and Virginia Bradshaw, to come to see him play often. His good friend on his travel ball team, Grayson Murphy of Independence High School in the Nashville area, committed to the Bruins earlier in the week, he noted. Coach Phil Todd called Bradshaw a "throwback kid" who works hard and behaves himself like athletes from decades ago. He's a hard worker in the classroom, on the court and in his job at Arby's, Todd said. Principal Kim McDaniel said, "He's the kind of kid you hope never leaves (your school)." Bradshaw also credited RHS guidance counselor Rex Booth for pushing him to build his body in the weight room. Several present believe that some of the nation's best-known basketball powers will continue to try to recruit Bradshaw before he can officially sign with Belmont in November. Bradshaw averaged 21 points and 12.5 rebounds per game as a junior.
