Democratic Women's Club offering chili/hot dog meal
The Logan County Democratic Women's Club will have a chili/hot dog event this Saturday, March 5, beginning at 4 p.m. at Demo-cratic headquarters in downtown Russellville. Chili, hot dogs, chips and a dessert will be served along with a drink for a donation of $5. All are welcome to attend.

Paul Sansom helps Middle win tournament title
Freshman Paul Sansom helped Middle Tennessee State Univer-sity win the championship of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate golf tournament on South Alabama's Gulf Shores last weekend. Playing the fifth position on the Blue Raiders' talented team, Sansom fired rounds of 3, 5r and 2 over on the 7,212-yard course course.
Middle was the only one of the 15 colleges to have a 54-hole total below par. The Blue Riaders were 6-under 863 as a team, beating 2nd place Kentucky by 11 strokes. Charlotte and Akron tied for third five strokes behind UK while Vanderbilt was 5th. Mississippi State was 9th and Louisville 11th.

13th District teams draw tough 14th District at region
The Russellville Panthers got the toughest draw possible for the 4th Region Tournament next wwek. Coach Dennis Pardue's 13th District runner-up team will play regional favorite Warren Central at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Diddle Arena. Champion Franklin-Simpson has it just as tough, meeting Bowling Green at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Central edged BGH in 4 overtimes Friday. The boys semifinals will be Monday, March 7 with the finals on that Tuesday.
Franklin's girls paid for their double overtime loss in the district finals by drawing regional favorite Bowling Green in the first game of the women's regional Monday at 6:30. To complete the 13th-14th matchups, 13th district champ Todd Central meets Green-wood Tuesday night. The girls semifinals and finals are slated for Friday and Saturday, since the girls state tournament is first.

Franklin holds off Panthers by 3 for district title
Not until Zack Hines' 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer was F-S' 13th District championship secure Friday, even though the Wild-cats led Russellville by 18 points in the 2nd quarter and by 15 as the 4th quarter began, Franklin hit 12 of 14 field goal attempts in the first quarter but then got only 10 of 24 free throws to fall during the game at Todd Central.
Andrew Howard hit 8 of 10 shots on the way to 17 points for the winners. Ryan Randolph added 12 each of points and rebounds.Da'Vonte Bryant had 13 points for RHS while D.J. Quarles had 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. Davis Pardue added 10 points while sophomores Jordan Kennedy and Hines scored 9 each. Kennedy blocked 4 shots and pulled down 8 rebounds.
The draw for the 4th Region Tournament will be Saturday morning.

F-S vs. RHS, Pardue vs. Clark: district finals constants
Streaks will continue when the 13^th District boys basketball tournament is played Friday at 7 p.m at Todd Central High School. Consider these bots of history:
*This is the eighth straight year Russellville and Franklin-Simpson have squared off in the championship game.
*It’s the seventh consecutive year that coaches Dennis Pardue of Russellville and David Clark of Franklin have met in the finals. They also faced each other in the ’03 championship game, but Pardue was the Todd Central coach at that time.
*This is nine straight appearances for Clark in the finals, all nine years that he has been the F-S boys coach. Before that, he also made it three times as the Lady Cats coach in five tries.
*Counting tonight, Pardue has coached in the championship game 11 times, making it in four of his six years as the coach of the Rebels before moving east to RHS.
*Each coach has won five district boys championships. Three of Pardue’s came while he was in charge in Elkton where tonight's tiebreaker will be played. His Panthers are defending champs.
*Clark holds a 5-3 record against Pardue in head-to-head district tournament meetings. Clark’s Cats have won 4 of the last 6 championships. Pardue’s Rebels won the championship against *Clark’s team in 2003, but Pardue’s final game as the Todd Central coach ended with Clark-coached Franklin beating Pardue’s team in red and white 51-45 in the 2004 semifinals.
*The coaches' sons, Davis Pardue and Tanner Clark, are the teams' best outside shooters as underclassmen. Their older bro-thers, Daniel Pardue and Coby Clark, also played in several of these finals.
*Clark’s dad, new Franklin mayor Ronnie Clark, is a former coach at Pardue’s alma mater, Auburn High School.
*Since Franklin-Simpson moved into the district from the 14^th District in 1995, the Wildcats and Russellville have played each other in the championship game 11 times.
*Only once in the 17 seasons since Franklin’s arrival has the 13th District championship game paired Logan County and Todd Central. In the other 16, either the Panthers or the Wildcats or both have advanced to regional play.

Auburn Art Show set March 5, artists invited
The Auburn Historical Society is planning an art show and sale on Saturday, March 5. It will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The location of the museum is 433 West Main Street. The show will be held in the house to the right of the museum if one faces the front of the museum from the street. The Auburn Historical Society sells tickets to the public and accepts no percentage of the artists’ sales. Any artist wishing to participate can call John Sheffield at 542-4185 (Auburn Banking Company) or Eloise Hadden, Auburn Historical Society president, at 542-4677.

Seasons end for Lady Panthers & Cougars
After a qame and a half of close, exciting basketball, the Todd Central Lady Rebels and Franklin-Simpson Wildcats have moved on to the final games of the 13th District Tournament. A controversial foul call in the closing seconds of the girls game which took a go-ahead goal off the RHS side of the scoreboard and led to the winning points for Todd gave the homestanding Lady Rebels a 65-61 win despite four players being in double figures for RHS, led by Amber Sydnor with 15. Brittany Hampton scored 13 while Kesi Neblett and Tameeka Rippy added 10 each.
"i'm extremely proud of the work ethic, determination, and heart our team showed plus the class with which they carried them-selves," said RHS coach Dedra Adler.
Logan's boys played hard to take a 25-24 halftime lead with subs Luke Bailey and Jon Richardson making a big difference. But the second half was all Franklin. Logan had scored only 8 second half points late in the game and lost 53-38, Twin Lancaster had 12 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Andrew Howard, Jerrell Wickware and Ryan Randolph led Coach David Clark's Wildcats.

Close district games expected tonight
In Tuesday’s games in the 13rh District Tournament at Todd Central, the Russellville Lady Panthers (9-17, 4-11 region, 1-5 district, 3-7 last 10) face Todd's Lady Rebels (14-8, 7-6 region, 4-2 district, 5-5 last 10) at 6:30. This could be the best opening round game of the tournament, since Todd beat the Lady Panthers just 45-42 when they played a couple of weeks ago. A key for RHS would be seniorTameeka Rippy finding her shooting touch again. The team’s leading scorer most of the season, she has been in an offensive slump lately. If she can hit outside, it would highly complement the floor leadership of sophomore point guard Amber Sydnor and the inside game of fellow 10^th grader Kesi Neblett.
Coach Steve Phillips’ Lady Rebels are one of the most improved teams in the region. Todd has several veterans, including senior Taylor Snardon, but the team has a great future with a number of excellent young players, including sophomore Ariel Johnson and solid freshman Claire Hart. The Lady Rebels have won four straight games and five of their last six with the only loss to Franklin-Simpson
The girls championship game will be Thursday at 7 p.m. F-S awaits tonight’s winner.
In Tuesday’s nightcap, the Logan County Cougars (14-10, 6-8 region, 3-4 district, 3-7 last 10) meet Franklin-Simpson. Logan had one of the best starts in the program’s history, going 9-0 and 11-1. The Cougars’ last victory to date, a 76-72 overtime win, came on Jan. 24 over Barren County.
Senior Troy Graham received a McDonald’s All-American nomination, but the key for Coach Harold Tackett’s team is the play of junior forward Twin Lancaster and sophomore point guard Torin Graham. Lancaster, who has passed the 1000-point career scoring mark, is among the top four players in the region in both scoring and rebounding.
Coach David Clark’s Wildcats (19-8, 11-7 region, 3-3 district, 8-2 last 10) have been playing well of late, including beating highly regarded Glasgow in their final regular season game. The Wildcats rely on the inside games of Ryan Randolph and J.T. Curtis, the quickness of top scorer Jerrell Wickware, and the outside shooting of sophomore Tanner Clark.
The boys championship game will be at 7 p.m. Friday. Russellville has already secured a slot in it.

Panthers advance to district finals, regional
The Russellville Panthers played some of their best ball of the season in winning their district opener against host Todd Central Monday. Coach Dennis Pardue's team led 20-6 after a quarter and 40-13 at halftime on the way to a 72-51 win. Jordan Kennedy led RHS with 17 points, one more than Kevin Temple. D.J. Quarles and De'Vonta Bryant added 10 each. Senior Nathan Fort led Todd with 14 while freshmen Jonmichael Brown and Gary Moore added 13 and 9. The finals will be Friday night.

F-S turns on late, holds off Lady Cougars
Trailing by only two points with 3:10 left and their leading scorer on the foul line, the Logan County Lady Cougars found themselves behind by 11 a little over a minute later. Top-seeded Franklin-Simpson went on to win 60-43 in the opening round of the district tournament at Todd Central Monday. Logan led by five three times in the first quarter but trailed 26-19 at the half.
Behind consecutive 3-pointers by Kayla MacAllister and Miran-da Rone, the Lady Cougars tied the score at 31-31. They both hit again for two more ties, but Logan couldn't get the lead.
Chasity Gooch scored 16 of her 22 points in the first half for the Lady Cats while Tradesha Chatman scored 15 and Shanice Williams 13.
Rone led Logan with 18 points while Jaylin Jones added 10 and MacAllister 9. Rone's senior classmates Meagan Williams and Victoria Elliott chipped in 4 and 2, respectively.

Lewisburg archers place at Chandlers
Lewisburg placed second in the elementary division and third in the middle school division of the Chandlers Archery Tournament Saturday. Kaitlyn Foster won the elementary female division with a 283 and Caitlyn Hardison was 6th (256) Aaron Baugh placed 2nd in elementary boys (28) and Blake Taylor 9th (267). Jackson Wells was 5th in the middle males division with a 274. Finishing in the next two spots behind him were Zac MacElfresh (271) and William Bagby (269). No other results have been reported.

District tournament begins tonight at Elkton
The 13^th District Tournament begins tonight at Todd Central. All four schools will be in action.
Russellville will play host Todd Central in both divisions while LCHS will take on Franklin-Simpson twice.
The regular season ended with two ties in the district standings. One didn’t matter, since the Logan County Cougars were going to play the Wildcats no matter which one is called the second seed. That game will be played Tuesday. The girls tie made a lot of difference, however, since the loser of the tiebreaker has to face perennial region and state power Franklin tonight. Coach Dedra Adler’s Lady Panthers won the tiebreaker and Tuesday will meet Todd Central, which is a very good team but so far has not been as tough as the Lady Cats.
Logan may have a chance against Coach Lex Lindsey’s Lady Cats, however, since the Lady Cougars are on a roll. After a very disappointing start for a team that has five highly experienced seniors (Miranda Rone, Meagan Williams, Victoria Elliott, Kayla MacAllister and Markita Pheal), Coach Scot MacAllister’s team has won five straight games, including a win over Russellville. JuniorJaylin Jones may be playing as well as anyone in the region right now. Most impressive on that win streak was the final game of the season when the Lady Cougars beat Greenwood 55-51 Friday. Greenwood is considered one of the top five teams in the region and went into that game with an 18-8 record.
A key to Monday’s encounter will be the play of Franklin’s Chastity Gooch, one of the leading contenders for Miss Kentucky Basketball. If she has a subpar game or gets in foul trouble, Logan County could pull the upset.
In the second game tonight, the top-seeded and defending champion Panthers (17-9, 13-4 region, 7-0 district, 7-3 last 10) will go against Todd (2-20, 0-11 region, 0-6 district, 1-9 last 10. The Panthers are built around senior swingmenD.J. Quarles, Victor Hampton, Kevin Temple and De’Vonta Bryant, but junior Davis Pardue and sophomores Zach Hines and Jordan Kennedy are huge contributors. Russellville coach Dennis Pardue has his team in the finals virtually every year. He was one of the most successful coaches in Todd Central history before moving east to R’ville/. Quarles has now scored over 1,000 points in his career, and he has been the Panthers’ leading rebounder the past two seasons.
It has been a rebuilding year for Todd, whose coach, Calvin Head, may be the youngest in the state. Head is a former Rebel standout and is building his team around a strong freshman class which won the district freshman championship nine days ago.
WRUS will carry both games and the entire tournament.

Women’s Heart Health topic at GOP Women’s Club
Mindi Hann will be the guest speaker at Tuesday's meeting of the Logan County Republican Women's Club at 5:30 p.m. Women's Heart Health will be the subject of the program. Light refreshments will be served at Republican Headquarters on Russellville's Main Street. Guests and members are requested to wear red as support of "Women's Heart Health Month." A short business meeting is also scheduled. The 2011 Membership Drive is continuing, Dues of $20 for members and $10 for associates are being collected. Lady Cougars upset Greenwood in season finale
The Logan County Lady Cougars won their fifth straight game to end the regular season Friday, upsetting highly regarded Green-wood 55-51at LCHS. SeniorKayla MacAllister not only led the team in scoring with 17 points but additionally hit the clinching free throws with six seconds left. Jaylin Jones and Miranda Rone added 11 points each. Molly Lamb led the Lady Gators (18-9) with 16 points.

It's RHS vs. Todd, LCHS vs. F-S in district games
Russellville will play host Todd Central in both divisions of the 13th District Tournament next week while LCHS will take on Franklin-Simpson twice. All four schools play each of the first two evenings.
On Monday the LCHS girls (10-12 through Wednesday, 8-8 in the region, 1-5 district, 5-5 in their last 10 games) will meet the Lady Cats (20-3, 16-3 region, 6-0 district, 9-1 last 10) at 6:30 p.m. The Panthers (17-9, 13-4 region, 7-0 district, 7-3 last 10) will go against Todd (2-20, 0-11 region, 0-6 district, 1-9 last 10) at 8.
On Tuesday, the Lady Panthers (9-16, 4-10 region, 1-5 district, 3-7 last 10) face Todd's Lady Rebels (13-8, 7-6 region, 4-2 district, 5-5 last 10) at 6:30. The Cougars (14-10, 6-8 region, 3-4 district, 3-7 last 10) meet the F-S Wildcats (18-8, 10-7 region, 3-3 district, 8-2 last 10) in the nightcap.
The girls championship game will be Thursday at 7 p.m. and the boys will meet Friday at that same time for the title.

Oak Grove offering fish fry Saturday night
Oak Grove Baptist will be hosting a fish fry dinner with all the community invited. This is for anyone who would like to attend on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. There will be food, fellowship and music. Auburn's 1st baseball, softball signups Saturday
Registration for Auburn youth baseball and softball will be held the next two Saturdays, Feb. 19 & 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the LCHS gymnasium. Among those groups signing up are tee ball (4-6 years), Machine pitch (7-8), softeeball (5-8). and softball 10U & 12U. The fee is $40.

Red River Sewing Day set at Schochoh
Sewing Day in association with the Red River Meeting House will be held at the Schochoh Community Center at 9 a.m. on Feb. 19. Those wanting to share a day of sewing are asking to bring food (soup, sandwiches or desserts), material, patterns and sewing machines to the 3720 Schochoh Road at 9 a.m. Tom and Dreama Ruley say, “Sewing day was a lot of fun and this time will be even better since we know now what a terrific place the community center is for this. There are small tables (yet larger than a sewing machine table) beside of outlets down each wall and long tables for laying out material and cutting. Last time was a good day of swapping patterns and cutting out new costumes for the re-enactors. This is a great way to get outfitted for the historical events and have help with difficult projects (any time period).”

Gardeners’ Swap Meet at Lewisburg Saturday
A Gardeners’ Swap Meet will be held at the Lewisburg City Complex building Saturday, Feb. 19 from 8:30-11 a.m. All gardeners are invited to swap seeds, plants or tips. Russellville schools announce makeup schedule
This Monday, Feb. 21, will be used to make up one of the 11 days Russellville schools have missed for weather this year, Superintendent Leon Smith has announced. Other makeup dates will be March 18 and May 25, 26 and 27. Previously scheduled early re-leased Fridays, including this week's and all of those in May, will now be full days. Graduation is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. Spring break will still be held April 4-8 and there will be no school on Election Day, May 17.

Freedom Singer Reagon to speak at WKU tonight
A member of the Freedom Singers who helped the civil rights movement of the 60s succeed will speak at Western Kentucky University tonight. Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon will speak on the theme "Uncovered and without Shelter, I Joined this Movement for Freedom" at 7:30 in Van Meter Auditorium. Part of Black History Month, the event is free and open to the public. Dr. Reagon has performed in Russellville, the home of fellow Freedom Singer Charles Neblett, who is expected to be present tonight.

Logan Memorial offering pain control lunch, lecture
Dr. Ram Pasupeleti, a fellowship trained specialist from The Center for Pain Management, will discuss treatment options for chronic pain at a free educational luncheon this Thursday. The public is invited to the event, which begins at noon at Logan Memorial Hos-pital, Dr. Paspuleti uses a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach with the latest techniques and technology. He is president of the Kentucky Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and has competency certification from the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians.

Logan County to name new football coach Wednesday
The new head football coach will be announced at Logan County High School Wednesday, Athletic Director Hugh McReynolds has announced. Principal Casey Jaynes will introduce the suc-cessor to Lee Proctor, who resigned after being involved with Cougar football half of his life as a player and coach. The 1:30 p.m. news conference is open to the public. Those attending should enter through the auxiliary gym doors.

Lady Cougars win big over South Warren Monday
The third team played all of the fourth quarter and still the Logan County Lady Cougars beat visiting South Warren 73-29 Monday.Miranda Rone hit three straight 3-pointers and totaled 20 points. Meagan Williams added 19 and Jaylin Jones, who hit 6 free throws early, added 14. Eighth grader Kapresha Powell scored 2 points and did fellow reserves Polly Cowan, Laura Hunt & Kate Brooks. Seniors Victoria Elliott & Markita Pheal had 6 each.
The Cougar reserves outplayed the bottom end of the South Warren bench, but the Logan starters had fallen behind by 20 points in three quarters and by as many as 26 in the final period. South won 63-43. Taylor Wells, Nick Offutt, Kyle Jaynes, Clint Knight and Landon Stratton finished the game for the Cougars, who enter-tain University Heights Tuesday night, as do the Lady Cougars.

Democrats holding raffle for UK-Florida tickets
Logan County’s Democrats are raffling tickets for the Florida at Kentucky basketball game at Rupp Arena Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26. Tickets are $3 each or two for $5. They will be on sale at Democratic Headquarters on Carrico Square Feb. 14-18 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 and from 2-5 p.m. daily. Olmstead wins both county b'ball championships
The games were very different with the girls romping 42-8 and the boys working hard for a 52-45 decision, but favored Olmstead won both divisions of the Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament Saturday, beating Auburn in both games. Coach Daniel Alcia' Lady Rams allowed the Lady Tigers only four points in the first three quarters.Madison Alvis, the champs' only 8th grader, scored 17 points while Rachel Barnett had 10, Logan Williamson and Cierra Johnson 4 each, Molly Latham 3, and Taylor Borders and Talea Mason 2 each. Chris Wilcutt is the assistant coach.
Matt Harper scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter, withstanding countless Tiger comebacks. Reserve Jose Garciahit a couple of big 3-pointers on the way to 7 points. Cen-ters dominated early with Olmstead's John Wilson Coots and Auburn's Ben Wright both scoring 10 points, but each only had two points in the second half. Tucker Baldwin scored 6 points for the winners withDaniel Beaty adding 5.Caleb Bruner also started for Coach Todd Gill's Rams, who finished 21-2. Tahmir Graham had 11 for the Tigers withKaleb Coursey scoring 8, Cole Stanley 7, Noah Whittinghill 5, and Hunter Britt 2. Taylor Owens saw extended action.Josh Hall coached both Auburn teams. Buddy Wright was the OMS boys assistant coach.

Lewisburg 2^nd Sunday to feature fitness, family
Lewisburg will kick off its 2nd Sunday program Feb. 13 at 2 p.m.. It is a statewide program that promotes physical fitness. Sonja Milamis director of this program and has fun activities planned for all ages and ability levels. Events will consist of a walking track, circuit workout, jump rope, hula hoops, and dance. This is all free to the public and is located in the City Complex Building. Door prizes will be given out!

Todd wins close over RHS & LCHS, frosh district title
Gary Moore scored with 10.7 seconds on an assist from Luke
Huff as Todd Central edged Russellville 39-35 in overtime in the finals of the 13th District 9th grade tournament Saturday. Todd, which lost only two games all year, had beaten homestanding Logan County by two points in the opening round.
In the finals, Huff scored 13, Austin Dukes 10, Moore 8, Tyler Harris 6 and William Fox 2 for the Rebels coached byMike Head.Barrett Croslin scored 10, Christian Naylor 7, twins Ta'Von Wells and Ta'Ron Wells 6 each, Desmond Quarles 4, and Zach Hendley 2 for RHS. Point guard Coco Darden forced the Rebels into several turnovers. Zach Denney and Seth Manley also are members of the Panther squad, which is coached by Greg Meacham and T.C. Thomason.
In the win over Logan, Dukes and Harris each scored 13 for Todd. Clint Knight led Coach Tim Arnold's Cougars with 15 points, andAdam Wilkins had 9, Landon Stratton 6, Brennan Summers 4, and Jacob Wood and Micahel Sydnor 2 each. Jon Clarc Toddalso played.
In a 51-45 win over Franklin-Simpson, Croslin scored 16, Ta'Von Wells 12, Naylor and Quarles 8 each and the other Wells twin 6.DeMaris Payne scored 22 and Joseph Hawkins 10 for the Wildcats.
First-year varsity head coach Calvin Head is high on this Todd freshman class, which he coached in junior high. Several of them play key varsity minutes, including Jonmichael Brown, who has not been in a single frosh game because he plays the most min-utes on the varsity, according to super fan Lucien Moore.

RHS, LCHS need tiebreaker for district seeding
Kaleshia Rose made a steal and Claire Hart hit a pair of free throws with 3.6 seconds to give Todd Central a 45-42 win over Russellville Friday. Brittany Hampton had 16 points and Amber Sydnor 12 for RHS, which led by two at the half. The loss means the Lady Panthers and Logan County are tied for third at 1-5 in the district and a tiebreaker will be used to see who has to face the Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats. The RHS boys won 69-55 to go a perfect 6-0 in the district. The Panthers will play Todd again.

Logan County Little League registration Saturday
Registration for Logan County Little League will be held the next four Saturdays, beginning Feb. 12, at the SK Sportsplex on Robins Way from 9 a.m.-noon and at the Russellville Recreation Center on Winter Street on Saturdays, Feb. 19 and March 5 at the same times. A copy of the child’s birth certificate must be turned in at registration. The fee is $50. Tryouts will be held at the SK Sportsplex on Sunday, March 13 at assigned times. Middle school tourney, LCHS-South Warren rescheduled
The Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournaments finals matching Olmstead and Auburn have been rescheduled for Saturday with the girls tipping off at 5 p.m... South Warren's doubleheader at LCHS has been postponed until Monday. The first 10 games of Logan County Jr. Pro Basketball, have all been canceled for this week, according to Amanda Epley.

WKU to honor 1971 Final Four team Saturday
Former Auburn High School basketball coach Jim Richards is among the key figures to be honored Saturday at halftime of the WKU Hilltoppers’ game against North Texas. His recognition comes a week after All-American Lillie Mason of Olmstead, who led the Lady Toppers to two Final Four appearances and has her number retired, was honored .
Richards, who later became head coach, was an assistant coach on the 1971 team which reached the Final Four with tournament wins over Jacksonville, Kentucky, and Ohio State, lost in double overtime in the semifinals and then beat Kansas for third place.
Among those expected to be present for the 3 p.m. games are starters Jim McDaniels, Clarence Glover, Jerry Dunn and Rex Bailey, reserves Chuck Witt, Terry Davis, Jeff Edkel and Danny Johnson and head coach Johnny Oldham. Olmstead and WKU alum Buck Sydnor was also a member of that staff. The late Jim Rose was the fifth starter. McDaniels led that club with his 29.3 points-per-game and 15.1 rpg averages while Dunn and Rose accounted for 15.4 ppg each and Glover averaged 10.9 rebounds an outing. They went 36-0 at Diddle among their three varsity seasons.

Black History program scheduled Sunday in Auburn
The Russellville-Logan County Branch of the NAACP will host a Black History program on Sunday, Feb. 13, 3 p.m. at the
Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Auburn, where the pastor, the Rev. Samuel Hunter, will be the guest speaker. The theme: "Still Struggling with the Change." This program is open to the public. "Please support this endeavor," says William Elliott, president.

Lee McMurry recovers from injury to lead RMS win
Lee McMurray , who had missed most of the basketball season after breaking his ankle in three places during football season, led Russellville Middle School to a 65-38 win over the Olmstead Ramblers, who had beaten the Panthers earlier in the season. McMurry scored 27 of his 35 points in the second half. He also had 7 steals. "it was the kind of game most players only dream about," said CoachRyan Davenport. Desmond Quarles scored 11 points for the Panthers, Camron Tisdale 6, Ta'Corlen Darden 4, Jason Mitchell 4,Colby Nichols 2, and Micah Naylor 2. "Not scoring but contributing big in the win with his defense and rebounding was Trevian Patterson," Davenport says. The win is significant, since Olmstead has a 20-2 record.
Earlier the Panthers had won four games against Todd County and two over Muhlenberg South,.Quarles scored 12 and Darden 11 in a 35-29 win over South. The second time, a 1-2-2 press broke the Suns down. Jacob Proctor hit three 3-pointers on the way to 16 points. Davenport's Panthers won 10 of their final 13 games.

Chaney's Dairy Barn holding fund raiser for soldier
Chaney's Dairy Barn will sponsor a benefit on Saturday, Feb 12 with proceeds going to wounded Auburn warrior J.D. Williams and family. Carl and Debra Chaney made the offer. Music will be provided at Chaney's by Skip Cleavinger, Joey Hayes, and Dan Modlin. They will play a benefit concert with donations going to help the family of Sgt. Williams, A donation bucket will be passed around at the performance and Chaney's will contribute 20 percent of food and ice cream sales from 6 to 8 p.m. Debbie Schafer, one of the organizers of a fund raiser at Auburn School on Jan. 29, reported on Feb. 1 that over $12,000 had been raised at the Minit-Mart sponsored event with Modern Woodmen planning to match a portion of the contributions. More donations were still coming in.

Olmstead & Auburn reach both county finals
The Olmstead boys and girls and both Auburn teams will meet in the championship games of the Logan County Middle School Basketball Tournament Monday after recording lopsided wins Saturday. The Lady Rams beat Adairville 51-23 with Cierra Johnsonscoring 20 and Madison Alvis 15.Lauren Batten and Brooke Barnes each scored 6 for Adairville. The Rams won over Chandlers 70-16 with Matt Harper scoring 17, John Wilson Coots 10, Daniel Beaty 9, and Tucker Baldwin and Caleb Bruner 8 each.
The Auburn Lady Tigers won over Lewisburg 36-15 with Adriana Hinojoza scoring 15. Regon Cole and Savannah Larson added 6 each. Jordan Goss scored 6 for the Lady Rangers in the loss. Ben Wright scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half and dominated the boards as the Tigers beat Lewisburg 50-29 in the final game of the day. Tahmir Graham added 12 points and Noah Whittinghill 8. Only three players scored for the Rangers. Dalton Furlow scored 14, Garrison Rosser 9 and Jackson Wells 6.
Fifth grader Austin Rayno scored 18 for Adairville Thursday but Chandlers advanced 43-41 while Hunter Anderson, Tanner ChapmanandAustin Hyde had 10 each for the Bears. Ann-Meguiar Bouldin had 8 points in the Adairville girls' 29-13 win over Chandlers while Alana Hallman and Brianna Wooden had 6 each.Desirae Powell topped the Lady Bears with 5.

Lady Cougars, Panthers get wins in Clash
The Russellville Panthers sealed the top seed in the boys district tournament and the Logan County Lady Cougars gave themselves more hope in the district with Clash of the Cats wins at LCHS Fri-day.
Behind 23 points and 11 rebounds by Miranda Rone and some huge plays by Jaylin Jones, the Lady Cougars held off the Lady Panthers 55-53 for their first district win in six tries. Logan led by 14 points in the third quarter, but RHS kept coming back. Jones had 6 each of points, steals and assists, Meagan Williams scored 10. Leading RHS with 14 points was Tameeka Rippy with 14 points whileLeAndra Hoosier added 10 and Brittany Hampton and Kesi Neblett 9 each. Unless the Lady Panthers upset Todd Central next week, the two teams will be tied for third in the seeding.
Sophomores Jordan Kennedy and Zach Hines played like veterans in helping the Panthers beat LCHS 74-63 to run their district record to 5-0. Kennedy had 12 points and 16 rebounds. Hines had 8 points and 4 assists, and ran the team well while senior point guard D.J. Quarles was in foul trouble. Quarles still had 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.
