Logan football games cancelled tonight

Tonight's Logan County football games--the middle school at home and the freshmen at Hart County--have been cancelled because of the forecast of heavy rains and potential flash floods, Athletic Director Greg Howard has announced.

Ron Cooke and the Folks band will play at the Auburn Senior Center Dance Saturday, Sept. 9, from 6-9 p.m.

Cougars win with ease

for third straight victory

Leading all the way, the Logan County Cougars doubled up on visiting Muhlenberg County 36-18 Friday to run their record to 2-0 this season and win their third straight game. Details are not yet available, but the game has been recorded and will be broadcast on WRUS on air, internet and app, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Defense, Barber lead Panthers

past Fort Campbell

Ed Barber rushed for 160 yards and scored 3 touchdowns while the defense held visiting Ft. Campbell scoreless until the final three seconds of the game, as Coach John Myers' Russellville Panthers beat the Falcons 20-6 Friday. Sophomore Xavier Evans intercepted 3 passes, including one in the end zone to stifle a great scoring chance for the visitors; one of his picks was called back. Damon Hales ran a reception 45 yards to the 1-yard line to set up one score. He finished with 85 yards on 14 carries. Jacob Naylor completed 5 of 10 passes for 102 yards. Anthony Woodard and Devin Quarles caught two each. Hunter McDowell kicked two conversions. The Panthers finished with 278 yards on the ground and 102 in the air for a 380 total. Denan Buchanan scored the Falcons' TD on a 14-yard run on the way to 84 yards on 20 carries but was injured on the play.

Med Center Health acquires

Orthopedics Plus

Orthopedics Plus, which has been providing physical therapy in Russellville most of this century, is now part of Med Center Health, the parent company of the Medical Center in Bowling Green. Jase Pinerola, who founded the company, will become vice president of physical rehabilitation services for the ever-growing health care corporation. In addition to Russellville, Orthopedics Plus also has locations in Elkton, Morgantown, Bowling Green, Scottsville, Brownsville and Hart County. The Russellville branch has been located since 2011 in Cambridge Place near the offices of Dr. Thad Wells and Trevor Coe and is not far from Sol Azteca.

Calvin Head named head

coach for BGH Lady Purples

Three months after he completed his third year as Russellville High School athletic director and girls basketball gcoach and his second year as Lady Panther softball coach, Calvin Head is now head coach of Bowling Green Lady Purples basketball. New BGH Athletic Director Mark Spader made the announcement Thursday. Head replaces highly successful Lady Purple coach Lavonda Johnson, who was fired early this summer after 10 of the best seasons in BGH girls basketball history. Head had previously resigned his RHS positions and was a teacher and assistant athletic director at BGH. One of Johnson's assistants last year was former Lady Panther star Chloe Elam. Head is a graduate of Todd Central High School where he was head boys basketball coach and head softball coach before coming to RHS.

Cougar football game Friday

to support student with cancer

From Logan County High School Athletic Director Greg Howard: Logan County Cougar football will play host to Muhlenberg County this Friday. This will be the Cougars' home opener. The Cougars will be having a "White Out" night.  This game will be in honor of Trevor Hesson, a classmate who is currently undergoing treatments for cancer. "White Out" tee shirts will be sold this week for $10. The proceeds from tee shirts and other donations will be given to him and his family to help with medical expenses.  Please help the Cougars "white out" the stands on Friday night. Rosemary and Chris annual

concert set Thursday

The annual summer concert featuring entertainers Chris Kramer and Rosemary Cundiff-Brown will be held this Thursday evening at the Logan County Extension Office with the doors opening at 6 p.m. and the musical program beginning at 7 p.m. Kramer is a minister at Northside Church of Christ in Russellville. Cundiff-Brown, an accomplished photographer, speech coach and professional singer/ actress in the Louisville area, is a graduate of Logan County High School. Tickets are $12 per person. Gettings, McKinnis lead Logan Middle softball win

Logan County Middle School Softball defeated Butler County 1-0 last week. Shelby Gettings earned the win for the Cougars. She pitched five innings, allowing no runs. Emerson MckKnnis led the Lady Cougars offensively with an RBI triple.

Russellville airport offering

scientific view of eclipse

Russellville Logan County Airport welcomes the public to the airport during Monday’s solar eclipse from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.. The airport will host a research event related to the eclipse. Suzanne Weaver Smith, director with NASA Kentucky and programs director for the University of Kentucky Unmanned Systems Research Consortium, and a team plan to launch three to four research balloons as part of the NASA Eclipse balloon project to live-stream video of the Eclipse and conduct additional science experiments along the entire path.  They will also be conducting multiple drone flights for capturing weather and atmospheric effects during the eclipse. Bring a chair and proper eye protection for an unobstructed view of the 2017 great American eclipse at the airport.

Cougars roar ahead 27-0 on

way to 42-24 win at Butler

 

The debate will rage this week over whether Logan County's defense or its running game was better in the Cougars' season opener Friday. What is a certainty: The Cougars are undefeated on the season. Coach Todd Adler's team jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and a 27-0 lead early in the third quarter on the way to a 42-24 win at Butler County to start the 2017 season. Sophomore Gary Hardy rushed for 273 yards and three touchdowns on just 13 carries. He scored first on an 87-yard run early in the game and later in the half on a 1-yard run after speeding for 68 yards to get the ball into that position. His 48-yard run three minutes into the fourth quarter sealed the win. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Ezell ran for over 100 yards and threw a touchdown pass to junior Kelby Epley. Anthony Dancer also scored. Caden McKinnis led a fired-up defense.

High School Football

season begins tonight

The 2017 high school football season opens tonight with both teams from the Land of Logan going on the road. Coach John Myers' Russellville Panthers will play in a doubleheader showcase at Glasgow against the host Scotties, one of their oldest rivals. The game should begin about 8 p.m. Coach Todd Adler's Logan County Cougars are headed to Butler County. This contest will be carried live on WRUS, both on air and on the internet. The RHS game will be aired at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both teams are coming off positives at the end of their last seasons. The Panthers went 12-2 and reached the state Final Four for the second straight season. The Cougars ended a long losing streak with a high-scoring rout of Todd Central to close out their campaign.

Russellville Ready session for

seniors and community offered

Russellville Junior/Senior High School will hold a meeting for seniors and their families to become “Russellville Ready” Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the RIS Tech Center on 7th Street (brick building located at the Rhea Stadium parking lot). The goal is to gain input and provide an overview of the “Russellville Ready” Initiative, a program to measure senior students at RHS in three important readiness areas: college, career, and citizenship. Community members, business leaders, parents, and students are invited to participate in this informative and involved session. Refreshments will be provided. Those who cannot stay for the entire 90-minute session, should feel free to arrive when they can and leave as needed.

Both Logan Middle football

teams shut out Mustangs

The Logan County Middle School Cougars won a hard-fought football season opener Thursday, defeating the Muhlenberg County Mustangs 6-0 in 2OTs. In what was a defensive battle. The Cougars were able to break the scoreless tie in the second overtime on a 15-yard pass from Wyatt Blake to Brennon Long. The Cougars were led in Rushing by Blake with 52 yards and receiving by Long with 40 yards. The Cougar defense held Muhlenberg County to only 60 yards of offense and forced two turnovers, including an interception in the end zone by Colton Pendleton in the second overtime. The Cougars' 7th Grade team also picked up a victory, winning 8-0. The only touchdown came on an Ethan Stratton run from 11 yards out and the 2-point conversion was completed from Corbin Rayno to Zane Batten, The Middle School Cougars will host South Hopkins Middle on Tuesday night at Cougar Stadium. Craig Bristow is head coach.

Mosier and Collier shut

Out Trigg middle softball

On opening night the Russellville Middle School Lady Panther Softball team defeated the Trigg County Wildcats 8-0. A’miyah Collier and Addie Mosier pitched a combined no hitter. Mosier recorded the win while striking out one and allowing no hits in two innings pitched. Collier finished off the Wildcats, striking out five and allowing no hits in two innings. Collier, Lilly Newman, Madison Penrod, Akiah Bell, Jaylah Kees and Mosier recorded hits. Mosier lead the Panthers with 2 RBIs. Ryan Davenport is the head coach of both the middle and high school teams.

Logan Middle softball beats F-S

Logan County Middle School Softball defeated Franklin Simpson 3-2 Thursday.Shelby Gettings earned the win for the Cougars. She pitched five innings, allowing two runs, one hit, striking out seven, and walking one. Emerson McKinnis and Kayleigh Sweeney each drove in one run to lead the Cougars. Taylor Proctor is the new coach with Gary Gettings assisting.

Ryan and Larry Craig to

share Al Smith Award

A journalist who lives in Russellville and his late uncle who worked in Russellville are co-recipients of the prestigious Al Smith Award for journalism and community service. The late Larry Craig worked for Smith as an editor in Al Smith Communications. Ryan Craig is a former writer at a Logan County newspaper Smith molded into one of the state's best before selling it. Ryan is a former executive director of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife Jenni live in Russellville while owning and operating the Todd County Standard. Jackson's Orchard ends Logan stops

Jackson's Orchard will not return to Russellville today with peaches for sale. The growth of the fruit has slowed considerably, meaning the supply is not sufficient to make the trip. A limited number of boxes were in the truck last week and the peaches were sold out in a few minutes. The popular agri-business has been setting up at the Kentucky Wonders Garden Market most of the summer, as it has for several years.

Petrie to hold town hall meetings

Rep. Jason Petrie, who represents Logan and Todd counties in the Kentucky House of Representatives, will hold town meetings the next few days. He will be at the Auburn Senior Center on Wren Wood Drive this Thursday at 3 p.m. and at Lewisburg Elementary School Friday, Aug. 18, at 4:30 p.m. His constituents are encouraged to attend.

Adairville assistant principal named

Jonathan Stovall is the new assistant principal at Adairville Elementary School, Principal Kristina Rice has announced. From Scottsville, he has several years of teaching experience from second to sixth grade and coaching/mentoring experiences in elementary and middle school grades. "He has a heart dedicated to students and to being a servant leader," Rice says. He and his wife Ashley, who teaches in the Franklin-Simpson schools, are the parents of twin daughters. Mr. Stovall replace Ben Bruni, who is now principal of Russellville JR/SR High School.

Jackson's Orchard to be

in Russellville Thursday

Jackson's Orchard of Bowling Green will make one of its final visits to Logan County Thursday at Fellowship Church of Christ across from the old Logan County Hospital. The truck loaded with peaches and apples usually arrives at noon and leaves about 2 p.m. Sometimes peaches sell out more quickly. Turner Valley Produce will also be there with tomatoes, cucumbers, already shelled peas and more vegetables. The final Kentucky Wonder Garden Market is expected to be next Thursday.

Logan schools to use NTI

From Logan County Schools Superintendent Paul Mullins: After much consideration we will utilize a NTI day on Aug. 21 and NOT have students in school that day (Eclipse Day). It’s a tough decision to make because there are so many wonderful learning opportunities that could take place that day. However, safety of students and staff always comes first and with our emergency services being stretched and with all of the unknowns for that day I must err on the side of safety.

The Logan County High School Boys and Girls Alumni Soccer Game will be played Saturday, Aug. 5. The girls will play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:30. The 2017 soccer players will be introduced. No admission will be charged. Grilled pork chop sandwiches and other concessions will be available.

From Logan County High School Athletic Director Greg Howard: The 2017 version of the Lady Cougar Volleyball team took time out from the “grind” of practice to pose for a picture. The Lady Cougar parents, coaches, and players are enjoying taking part our school-wide “Cougar Pride” theme and installed window dressings at the aux gym. Not only do they look cool but send a message about all of us working together to create “Cougar Pride” all across our campus.
