Thad Key to be inducted into RHS Alumni Sports Hall of Fame
From Greg Owens in The R Club: The RHS Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame committee is pleased to announce the 2018 inductee will be 1998 graduate Thad Key. As a member of the 13th class to be inducted, he was the senior leader on Coach Phil Todd's first regional championship basketball team in 1998. An all-round athlete, Thad was named to the Courier Journal All State Team in '98 and was the 400 meter State Champion as a member of our track team in '96. He scored 1,521 points in his career, ranking him in the top 10 all time at RHS. He played on Kentucky Wesleyan's 2001 National Championship team. He also played football, baseball and soccer for the Panthers. Induction ceremonies will be Jan. 26, 2018.

conducting coat drive Friday
From LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard: Logan County Athletics would like to announce a coat collection on Friday, Nov. 3. The LCHS Ambassadors will be set up outside the gates collecting coats for the needy. Please get the word out about this worthy cause. We have many families in our community that would love to have a coat to keep them warm. Look through your closets and find a coat or two that are slightly used and bring them next Friday. Our athletes and coaches care about their community and want to help. This will be one of several community projects the athletic department will be involved in. Thanks to Ms. Jama Richardson and our wonderful ambassadors!

Hendricks, Johnson qualify
for state cross country
Two Logan County runners qualified for the state Class 3A cross country meet by their performances in the regional meet at Green County High School Saturday. John Hendricks ran a strong fourth, coming between team champion South Warren's second, third and fourth place finishers. Hendricks ran a 16:56.99. Meredith Johnson placed 16th in the girls division with 22:04.94. Coach Joe Dan Laster's Cougars placed seventh overall and his Lady Cougars were eighth.

Cougars whip Todd
34-6 to finish 10-0
The Logan County Cougars dominated the fourth quarter on the way to a 34-6 win over visiting Todd Central Friday to cap a 10-0 undefeated regular season. Coach Todd Adler was able to let some of his seniors play different roles late with lineman Joseph Peterson and linebacker Curtis Shelton scoring touchdowns. Gary Hardy, Tyler Ezell and Carson Bradley led the rushing attack, and Ezell was 7 of 11 passing for 74 yards. The Cougars will entertain Warren Central to start the playoffs next week.

Cougars leading but Panthers
trailing Franklin at halftime
After the first half was scoreless until very late, the Logan County Cougars scored two quick touchdowns just before halftime to lead visiting Todd Central 12-0 at the intermission. If Coach Todd Adler's team can hold on to the lead, the Cougars will finish the regular season with a 10-0 record. Franklin-Simpson began its first four drives at Russellville's 33, 10, 32 and 39 yard lines and scored on three of them. The Wildcats lead RHS 34-6 at the half. The Panthers got their score on a 75-yard run by Jacolbie Mason with 4:11 remaining in the second quarter. The Panthers managed only 73 yards total offense in the half because of rushing losses. Quarterback Jacob Naylor was 0 for 6 passing. Franklin didn't try a pass.

Cougars now only undefeated
team left in Class 4A
The Logan County Cougars hopefully are just a week away from entering the Kentucky High School Athletic Association playoffs as the only undefeated team in Class 4A in the state. Last Friday while Coach Todd Adler’s Cougars were whipping Calloway County to go to 9-0, Meanwhile defending state champion Johnson Central lost its first game of the season to Ashland Blazer, a team which the Golden Eagles beat 51-0 in last year’s playoffs. The other one-loss team is Wayne County, which Johnson Central also beat 51-0 in last year’s semifinals. Johnson Central is 59-6 over the last five seasons. Logan County doesn’t have credentials like that, but it does have Class 4A’s only unblemished record before 7 p.m. Oct. 27. A recording of the game will be aired on WRUS Saturday at 2 p.m.

Trio of key Cougars out
with serious injuries
Last week's 49-11 win over Calloway County proved costly for the Logan County Cougars. Coach Todd Adler says that two of them are out for the season and the third is weeks away from playing. Anthony Dancer, who played a number of roles including punter, has a both torn ACL and meniscus; surgery is scheduled next Thursday, Nov. 2. Dylan Penick, a kick returner and running back, also has a torn ACL and will undergo surgery Halloween Day, Tuesday. Rugged defender Ethan Steenbergen doesn't need surgery but has a "bad sprain" and is out three to five weeks. If he misses just three weeks, he would be ready for the regional championship game, if the Cougars can reach that stage. Penick, who was the starting pitcher for the Cougars' in last spring's regional championship game, is the second key baseball player to be hurt in football. Third Bell underwent thumb surgery early in the season. The Cougars play Todd Central on Senior Night Friday with the goal an undefeated regular season.

Junior Karrah Cron injured her knee in a physical education class, tried to play in the regional opener Monday night, and injured it more severely going for a ball in the Lady Cougars' win over Russell County, Her mother, Kim Cron, says, "Karrah will have surgery to repair a torn ACL, MCL and to fix the meniscus."

Lady Cougars drown Lady Lakers
After sweeping Russell County 25-13, 25-12, 25-12 in the opening round of the Fourth Region Tournament Monday, the Logan County volleyball team will meet a familiar foe Wednesday night. Coach Steven Lyne’s Lady Cougars (23-14) will face Greenwood (32-2) at 6 p.m. in the semifinals at Warren East. Greenwood and Logan have compiled the best records of consistency in the region over the past 15 seasons, beginning when Logan won in the 2003 regional semifinals. Ever since they have squared off in most regionals somewhere along the way. Greenwood won their only previous encounter this season in straight games. Logan has won eight straight matches in the last two weeks, including taking the championship with five sweeps in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Western Kentucky Smack Down. The Lady Cougars have won 19 straight games in that eight-match win streak.

Daniel Roberts to be in World
Series dugout this week
For the first time since Denny Doyle was the second baseman for the Boston Red Sox in 1975, a Logan Countian will be in a World Series dugout this week. Dr. Daniel Roberts is a key member of the training staff for the American Legion champion Houston Astros, who eliminated the New York Yankees in Game 7 this weekend. Roberts, an Adairville native, is a 2001 graduate of Logan County High School. He received his physical therapy education at Eastern Kentucky University and East Tennessee State University. He worked as the Astros' minor league rehabilitation coordinator before moving to the big leagues. Roberts kept the books for the Logan County Cougars in his first three years of high school and then played for Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars in his senior season.

Services set for Sylvia Thacker
Funeral services for Sylvia Turner Thacker will be held at Schochoh Church of Christ Tuesday at 11 a.m. She was the matriarch of one of the biggest farming operations in Logan County during part of the late 20th century. She and her husband, Al Thacker, and her late father, Albert Turner, founded T&T Farms in Schochoh on the family farm where Albert and his siblings had been raised. In addition to farming thousands of acres, they ran a large trucking operation and grain bins. They also were among the first involved in agricultural commodities futures. Among her many survivors are her son, Al Thacker Jr., and her daughters, Karen Thacker and Bonnie Wimpee. Visitation is at Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin today from 4-8 p.m. and from 6-8 a.m. Tuesday before it starts at the church at 9 a.m.

Marching Cougars earn
berth in state 4A semifinals
Saturday the Logan County Cougar Marching Band competed in the KMEA Class 4A-West Regional. The Cougar Band placed 8th, and this has qualified them to advance to the KMEA Class 4A State Semifinals event this coming Saturday at South Oldham High School. The Cougar Band will be performing at 12:45 p.m. (EST). Director David Dayton’s band started the regular season by sweeping first place honors at Franklin-Simpson in Class 4A, Color Guard and Percussion. Placing highly in more events followed, leading to postseason success.

Lady Cougars to open volleyball region Monday against Russell
The Logan County Lady Cougars will open play in their 17th straight regional tournament Monday against 16th District runner-up Russell County (16-12) at 6:30 p.m. at Warren East High School. Logan, which has gone to region as district champion 15 straight seasons and 16 of the 17, has a 22-14 record, which is the second highest win total among teams remaining in the Fourth Region. If Coach Steven Lyne’s team wins Monday, the Lady Cougars will most likely meet their annual regional fellow powerhouse Greenwood (31-2) in Tuesday’s 6 p.m. semifinal. The championship match will be played at 6:30 Wednesday.

Rockets edge Panthers
for district title
Russellville came up a point short of forcing overtime and let the Class 1A district championship and home field advantage slip away 22-21 at Crittenden County Friday. The Panthers trailed 22-13, but scored on a 67-yard run by Javaren Robey and a two-point conversion by Jacob Naylor to pull within a point early in the fourth quarter. RHS had a couple of chances to take the lead, but couldn't convert a pair of fourth down plays. Turnovers and penalties cost RHS. Russellville will host Fort Knox in the playoffs in two weeks but probably won't be home again after that until the state semifinals, if they can come back to win the region.

Cougars earn running
clock, remain undefeated
Earning their second running clock of the season, the Logan County Cougars finished 4-0 in their Class 4A District Friday by blowing out visiting Calloway County 49-11. Coach Todd Adler's team is now 9-0 and can wrap up an undefeated regular season next week against visiting Todd Central. A year ago this weekend, the Cougars were carrying the weight of a 42-game losing streak before crushing Todd at Elkton. Local superintendents to
speak at press conference
Region 3 Kentucky School Boards Association superintendents and board members will hold a press conference on Monday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. at Warren East High School. The purpose is "to inform school leaders and community members about how each aspect of the governor's pension reform proposal will specifically impact classrooms, schools, school districts, and the long term quality of our communities across the Commonwealth." Among the speakers will be Logan County Superintendent Paul Mullins and Russellville Superintendent Bart Flener along with Butler County Superintendent Scott Howard, a former Lewisburg Middle School basketball coach.

Cougars have & Panthers seek
home field throughout playoffs
Regardless of what happens tonight against winless Calloway County or next week against Todd Central (6-3 after a win over Butler County last night), if the Logan County Cougars (8-0) go on the road to play football again in 2017, it will be in the state championship game at Kroger Field in Lexington. The Russellville Panthers (6-2) need a win tonight at Crittenden County (4-4) to guarantee themselves similar status. Both play in Region I, District 1 of their classifications, and this is a year for odd numbered districts and regions to be hosts. As champions of those districts, they have the tiebreaker against anyone else whom they would play, all the way through the state semifinals. More than likely, Logan will host winless Warren Central in two weeks while RHS would take on winless Caverna. Waiting in the wings for LCHS will be Franklin-Simpson after either Warren East or Allen County-Scottsville, all talented teams. No other Class 1A team west of Louisville besides Russellville is ranked in the state.

LCHS archery practice to begin
From Coach Tina Lynch: Logan County High School Archery will begin practicing on Nov. 13 in the High School Auxiliary Gym. Practices begin at 6 p.m. and the archers should be there no later than 5:45 p.m. There is a required parent meeting on Oct. 26 in the Auxiliary Gym. This meeting will begin at 6p.m. and will not last more than an hour. Archers should also attend this meeting. Sports Physicals can be turned in at the parent meeting, but must be turned in before practicing.

Lady Cougars win 15th straight district volleyball championship
When the Logan County Lady Cougars beat both Todd Central and Franklin-Simpson to win the 13th District Volleyball Tournament Tuesday, eye-popping streaks continued. It was their 15th district championship, 16th straight regional berth, 110th straight district match win, and 246th consecutive game won. They have not lost a district championship since 2002, a match since Aug. 17, 2004 and a district game since Sept. 11, 2004. In fact, they are 252-3 in games against Russellville, Todd and F-S since the 13th District was created in 2003. Coach Steven Lyne’s team outscored their two opponents in the district tournament 150-57. Franklin-Simpson beat RHS 25-16, 25-22, 25-12 in the opening round.

South Russellville Bypass
to open in early November
The South Russellville Bypass will open in early November, Kentucky Department of Transportation Spokesman Wes Watt reports. The Bypass begins at U.S. 68-80 near the Freeland automobile dealership across the four-lane from the North Bypass, which has been open throughout the 21st century. The section between the Bowling Green and Franklin roads has been open for a few years. The road will now extend across the Nashville and Orndorff Mill roads before intersecting with U.S. 79 (the Clarksville Road) near Russellville High School. It joins the North Bypass at that juncture, creating an entire circle around Logan's county seat.

Both Logan County soccer teams, which lost close matches in the 13th Dstrict Tournament finals last week, will play in the regional tournament at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Coach Barry McReynolds' Lady Cougars (5-9) will go against 15th District runner-up Glasgow (9-11) at South Warren. The winner gets Bowling Green(12-3-1) at 5:30 Tuesday. Coach Eric Evans' Cougars (7-10-1) will play at the same time Monday against 15th District runner-up Clinton County (8-10-1) at Greenwood. The winner will go against Warren Central (19-1) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Darden leads Toppers in tackles during Homecoming romp
Ta'Corian 'CoCo' Darden could not attend Saturday afternoon's Russellville Alumni Meet & Greet in which he was honored as one of the 50 Greatest Players in Panther football history. He was busy. Darden made three of the earliest tackles in the game and led the Toppers in total tackles at the same time the top Panthers were being honored. He had seven tackles--five of them solos--in WKU's 45-14 trouncing of Charlotte during Western's Homecoming. He now has 21 tackles, including three for losses. Senior quarterback Mike White passed for five touchdowns and ran for another as Coach Mike Sanford's team broke out of its offensive slump.

Cougars win in last 10 seconds
again to clinch championship
With 10 seconds remaining in the game, freshman Lucas Arevelo kicked a 19-yard field goal for the Logan County Cougars Friday. That field goal signaled a multiplicity of accomplishments: a 23-20 win at Madisonville-North Hopkins, an 8-0 start to the season, the district Class 4A championship, and a throng of delighted fans at the game and listening at home on WRUS. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Ezell not only accounted for almost 200 yards total offense himself, but also scored two touchdowns rushing and picked up first downs on fourth down plays twice in the winning drive. Sophomore Gary Hardy scored the other touchdown and also knocked the ball loose from the Maroons' kickoff returner to get possession back for the Cougars to set up the winning points. Logan has one more district game. That will be at home against Calloway County, which was winless going into Friday's game against Hopkinsville. Since Logan has beaten both Hoptown and M-NH, Coach Todd Adler's team has won the district regardless of what happens against the Lakers. They will face District 2's fourth-place squad, probably Warren Central, at home the first Friday in November.

4 things Logan Countians need
to know about the weekend
Factoids about this weekend that you may not know:
1) The Russellville Alumni Meet & Greet which traditionally is held on Friday evenings has been moved to Saturday, from 3-6 p.m. in the deGraffenried Lobby at Russellville High School.
2) The undefeated Logan County Cougars play what may be the best team on their schedule tonight in Madisonville. Coach Todd Adler's 7-0 team is ranked fifth in the state in Class 4A. The game will be carried live on all of WRUS' platforms.
3) The Fulton City team which Russellville plays on the road tonight is coached by Dain Grgory, a former Cougar head coach. That game is not going to be broadcast.
4) The Logan County Farmers' Market will be closed Saturday because of Tobacco & Heritage Festival activities. The market will resume Tuesday and continue through the end of October.

Steve Metzger wins Festival
song writing contest
The Russellville Arts Council’s Song Writing Contest winners will share their original songs in honor of the 225th Anniversary of Logan County Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. as part of the Karaoke Contest led by Clay Bilyeu. First place went to Steve Metzger with “At Home in Logan.” Jaclyn Batchelor placed second with “The Place that Made Me” and Melanie Manley third with “This is Logan County.” Honorable Mention was awarded to Travis Bryant with “Logan County.”

Undefeated Cougars score on final play of game to edge Hoptown
Sophomore quarterback Tyler Ezell dived into the end zone as time expired on the game clock to give the Logan County Cougars a 13-12 win over visiting Hopkinsville Thursday. Logan's defense was tough all night, holding the Tigers to four Taylor Harton field goals, including on two possessions that began inside the Cougar 10 on turnovers. Logan only ran 15 plays the entire first half, but marched 75 yards on the opening possession of the second half and 73 yards on the final possession of the game. Gary Hardy did his best running on that opening drive and scored from a yard out. Ezell kicked the conversion for what proved to be the winning point. Coach Todd Adler's team is 7-0 on the season, 2-0 in its Class 4A district, and the winner of eight straight games.

Deputy Sheriff Victor
Romero dies of cancer
After a long battle with cancer, Logan County Deputy Sheriff Victor Romero died Tuesday at the Hospice House in Bowling Green. He served as Chief Bailiff at the Justice Center for 18 years. His was widely popular, as all the tributes to him on Facebook attest. Funeral services will be Friday. Hear his obituary on WRUS News.

Teams ranked 6th in state
Although neither of them played last week, both Logan County and Russellvile moved up in state rankings by the Associated Press. They are each ranked sixth in Kentucky in their classes. The Cougars join Class 4A’s top-ranked Johnson Central as the only undefeated teams in the class at 6-0. Coach Todd Adler’s Cougars are just two votes behind number five Franklin-Simpson. In Logan’s district, Madisonville-North Hopkins is 12th and Thursday’s opponent, Hopkinsville, is number 15. Coach John Myers’ Panthers are the only team west of Louisville to receive votes in Class 1A.

Historic Homes Tour

Five historic homes, which Logan Chamber Acting Executive Director Karen Logan calls ‘magnificent,’ will be open this afternoon on the Historic Homes Tour of the Tobacco & Heritage Festival from 2-6:30 p.m. They are the Dawson-Morton House at the end of Morton Road between Russellville and Dennis; Fountain Manor, 201 West Ninth Street in Russellville; the O’Bannon House on the northeast corner of Ninth and Main in Russellville, which is the long-time home of Jane Dodson Vick; the Crewdson-Teel House at125 West Main Street in Auburn; and McCutchen Meadows, located just west of Auburn and near Champion PetFoods, which has been restored and made public by Ben and Katina Kemplin. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Logan Chamber or at any of the homes during the tour.
