Live Nativity in Lewisburg

The annual Live Nativity Scene in Lewisburg sponsored by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church there will be staged this week on Main Street. Hours will be from 5-9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Church members will wear costumes and animals will be part of it. Refreshments will be served at the church.

Water line break closes LCHS,

causes cancellation of games

Tonight's scheduled basketball doubleheader at Logan County High School against girls and boys teams from Edmonson County has been cancelled, according to Athletic Director Greg Howard. A water line break caused students to be dismissed at 11:45 a.m. today, and the games had to be cancelled. This would have been the season opener for Coach Finley Baird's Lady Cougars. Coach Lonnie Mason's Cougars won their opener Monday at Warren East.

The Logan County Cougars got the local high school basketball season off to a good start Monday by winning on the road. Coach Lonnie Mason's team beat Warren East 59-52 in overtime. Watch The LoJo for details.

Cougars open 2017-18

The varsity 2017-18 basketball season in the Land of Logan begins tonight when Coach Lonnie Mason takes his Logan County Cougars to Warren East for a junior varsity-varsity double-header. Both girls teams make their debuts Tuesday night when Coach Shannon Booth is the bench boss for the first time and Coach Finley Baird leads her Lady Cougars into action for the first time in four years not as the defending district champions. The Lady Panthers will be at Warren Central while the Lady Cougars will join their male counterparts in entertaining Edmonson County at the LCHS gym. Coach Rex Booth doesn't open his first season as head coach of the Panthers until Friday when RHS plays host to Allen County-Scottsville, which also has a new coach in Nick Chaykowsky.

Basketball Clash of the Alumni

Cats Saturday evening

Former boys basketball players from Logan County and Russellville high schools will Clash Saturday at RHS for fun and to raise funds for both high schools' basketball programs and for the Givin' Back youth development program. Older alumni will play in the first game, beginning at 6 p.m., and more recent graduates will clash in the second game. Coach Lonnie Mason and Billy Joe Coleman are organizing the Cougar alumni while coaches Jae Allison, Phil Todd and Ryan Davenport are working with the former Panthers.

Ben Brown will not seek

reelection as PVA

Logan County Property Valuation Administrator Ben Brown announced on WRUS' Feedback Monday morning that he will not seek another term as PVA in next year's elections. A graduate of Olmstead High School, Brown became PVA in 1994, succeeding his great uncle, Karl Dawson, who had served in that capacity for over 40 years. He has been elected every four years since. Brown and his wife, the former Sandra Eggleston, have four daughters. He told Don Neagle of WRUS that he wants to travel and concentrate more on farming. According to Logan County Republican chairman Barry Kennedy, the deadline for taking the eligibility test to hold the office passed last Saturday.

The Southern Kyentucky Pastfinders' last regularly scheduled meeting for 2017 will be Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Logan County Public Library. The speaker will be Krista Castillo, Museum Coordinator for Fort Negley Park in Nashville. Ms. Castillo’s program is entitled “Santa Claus in the Trenches.” In her program, Ms. Castillo explores not only how soldiers, civilians, and slaves spent the holiday, but also how our modern day interpretation of Christmas emerged from an era of conflict and war. The program is free and the public is welcome.

Mac Johns retiring as

Todd County Attorney

Mac Johns, who is nearing completion of his seventh term as county attorney for Todd County, announced at a recent meeting of Todd Fiscal Court that he will not seek an eighth term in that office, according to Ryan Craig of the Todd County Standard. He served as an assistant prosecutor in both the county and commonwealth attorneys’ offices beginning in 1982 before being elected county attorney in 1990, a position he has held ever since. A 1975 graduate of Russellville High School, Johns is the son of Harold Ray and Sue Johns of Russellville and the brother of Russellville agri-businesswoman Marsha Orndorff. At the same meeting, Todd County Judge/Executive Daryl Greenfield and County Clerk Kim Chapman also announced they will not seek reelection. Both will complete their second terms in 2018.

Lisa White says CharacterWorks celebration to be her last

As she announced an upcoming CharacterWorks celebration, local founder Lisa White also said she is retiring from the Russellville Schools and is giving up CharacterWorks leadership. CharacterWorks will hold its Citizens of Character recognition Dec. 3 at Crosslands Church from 2-3:30 p.m. Students from both Logan County and Russellville City Schools will be recognized for exhibiting exemplary character each day at school. Teachers will nominate one student from each classroom in grades K-8. White says, "This is my last year as CharacterWorks director, given that I am retiring and will not be working in Logan County.  Sandra Bollenbecker has agreed to take over this responsibility." White has moved from Russellville High assistant principal to Stevenson Elementary principal to Central Office administrator while leading CharacterWorks. A former teacher in the Logan County system and now teaches at RHS.

RHS Beta team wins region

The Russellville High School Beta Club quiz bowl team (Austin Coursey, Benjamin Slack, Adam Williams, and Matthew Wilkerson) received first place at their district competition in Bowling Green on Nov. 3. Assistant Coach Donna Wilkerson says, "A couple of these guys are alumni from the team that went to the national convention in New Orleans as Jr. Betas a couple of years ago and finished and finished as national quiz bowl runners-up." Overall, the club finished 2nd out of 14 schools.

Dale Sanders appears on WRUS

At 8:30, this morning, Don Neagle will talk on WRUS radio with Dale Sanders, 82, who recently became the oldest man to walk the 2000 miles-plus of the fame Appalachian Trail. He also has been the oldest man to travel in a canoe the entire length of the Mississippi River among his many adventures. An Olmstead area native, Sanders left Logan County over 60 years ago and spent much of his adult life in the U.S. Navy. He is the brother of Judy Sanders Silvey and has been involved in fundraising and awareness raising of Juvenile Diabetes in honor of her granddaughter, Anna Silvey.

Logan County High volleyball player Kerra Cornist will sign to play collegiate volleyball for the University of Evansville at a public ceremony Monday, Nov. 13, at 5:45 p.m. in the school's Commons Area. Panthers shell Fort Knox 41-8

to advance in playoffs

After a scoreless first quarter, the Russellville Panthers blasted through Fort Knox's defense for 41 points and beat the Eagles 41-8 in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs Friday at Rhea Stadium. Coach John Myers' team (7-4) now advances to the regional semifinals at Campbellsville next week. The home teams in Class 1A's first region were overwhelmingly dominant Friday. Three of them won by shutouts, and the average score for the four romps was 52-2. In addition to their own game Friday, the Panthers have a vested interest in the other contest involving Bethlehem at Crittenden County. If the Panthers win, they would have to go to Crittenden County again if the Rockets are victorious, but if Bethlehem wins at Marion, the regional finals would be in Russellville Nov. 17.

Cougars unwind running clock

The Logan County Cougars could have panicked when they trailed visiting Warren Central 12-7 on a second Central touchdown pass midway through the first quarter in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs Friday. Instead they went to work. By the time the Dragons ran their next offensive play, they found themselves trailing 28-12. It began when Reggie Powell took the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Two onside kickoffs by Logan's Tristan Blake were recovered by teammate Gary Hardy. Quarterback Tyler Ezell, who had thrown two interceptions, scored twice on running plays, Hardy was running hard and well. Chandler Silvey caught four passes for 85 yards, and freshman Lucas Arevalo kicked the first six extra points. Dontavious Blann and Silvey each caught touchdown passes. Silvey's came with 19.6 seconds remaining in the half. That made the score 48-12, and the clock started running. Freshman Maurice Gordon. added a touchdown early in the rapidly moving fourth quarter. Coach Todd Adler's Cougars (11-0) will entertain Hopkinsville in next week's regional semifinals.

Don Neagle to celebrate 80th

birthday in the WRUS airchair

A fixture in Logan County life and culture, Don Neagle, will celebrate his 80th birthday Friday. Where? Where else? He will be broadcasting in the early morning hours on WRUS, where he has been on the air for 59 years. A few things have changed over the years. In addition to being heard at 610 AM on the traditional airwaves, his lovely white locks and beard will be visible for five hours on the Electric Plant Board's SmartNet TV while his programs will be available around the world on smart phones and the internet. Television had been invented when he started working at WRUS. Cablevision, smart phones and the internet would wait a while.

Both home playoff games

Friday to begin at 7 p.m.

Both high school football teams from the Land of Logan will play at home Friday to start the KHSAA playoffs, and both games will begin at 7 p.m. District 4A champion Logan County will entertain winless Warren Central in an attempt to raise its record to 11-0 and its win streak to 12 games. District 1A runner-up Russellville (6-4) will entertain Fort Knox (3-7). The Logan game will be carried live on WRUS with the RHS game on delayed recording Saturday at 2 p.m.

Dr. Daniel Roberts and his fellow Houston Astros will know after tonight's World Series Game 7 in Los Angeles what kind of ring they'll be wearing for the foreseeable future. The Astros and the Dodgers are deadlocked at three games each going into tonight's winner-take-all finale on Channel 17. Roberts, who is part of the varsity training staff for Houston, knows he will at least be fitted for an American League jewelry, but a win tonight ups the value of the ring considerably.
