Logan Schools dealing with unrelated disturbing messagesTwo completely unrelated incidents that caused concern for Logan County Schools administrators have been thoroughly investigated and action taken to resolve both of them, Superintendent Paul Mullins says.

One involved an implied threat on social media believed to have been posted by a Lewisburg Elementary School student Sunday night. That student has been questioned and will not be permitted to attend school Tuesday.

The other incident literally involved “reading the handwriting on the wall.” That wall was in a girls restroom at Logan County High School found Friday afternoon. The high school has been thoroughly searched, Mullins says, and extra security will be on hand at the school Tuesday.

School was not in session Monday because of the Presidents’ Day holiday.

Mullins emphasizes the two threats are not related, and that due diligence has been taken to avoid anything happening.

The following are two statements the superintendent released late Monday afternoon:

Lewisburg Elementary:

The purpose of this statement is to make you aware that a picture of a gun with the words “school supplies” written across it was recently discovered as having been posted on Instagram. The posting has been turned over to law enforcement and is being investigated. The School District has reason to believe that a student at Lewisburg Elementary School posted the picture.  We have identified the student who posted the message and they will not be at school. At this time, we do not believe a serious threat exists, but we are making you aware of this information in our continuing effort to keep you informed.  Please talk with your students about the seriousness of making any type of school threat whether on school property or off school property. All threats regarding our schools must be taken seriously and can lead to significant disciplinary and legal action.

Logan County High School:

We were recently made aware of some writings on one of the girls’ restroom walls at Logan County High School that referred to a weapon. However, the writings appear to be a cry for help and not a specific threat. Law enforcement has been notified and is conducting an investigation. While we do not believe a serious threat of harm is presented, we are making you aware of this situation in our continuing effort to keep you informed. There will be additional law enforcement at LCHS on Tuesday morning. Please talk with your students about the seriousness of making any type of school threat whether on school property or off school property. All threats regarding our schools must be taken seriously and can lead to significant disciplinary and legal action.
