Undefeated East knocks
Cougars from unbeaten list
In a battle of unbeaten baseball teams Friday, Warren East escaped with a 3-2 win over visiting Logan County. The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead on second-inning hits by Jacob Smock and Parker White, but even though Logan out-hit the Raiders 8-5, they could score no more. East scored what proved to be the winning run when Nolan Ford, who was hit by a Riley Ferguson
pitch, scored on an RBI walk to Dakota Basham. Ferguson was pitching in relief of starter Nick Wooden.

Russellville native Joyce Purvis Everett dies
Russellville native Joyce Purvis Everett died in Louisville this week. She was the daughter of the late Douglas and Kathleen Purvis and the sister of James Douglas 'Jim' Purvis. Her obituary is attached.

Pair of Logan roads impacted by flood waters
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3 area has multiple roads impacted by flooding. Two in Logan County are KY 107 at mile point 2 and KY 1153 at mile point 3.5. These impacts can come and go quickly and conditions can change rapidly, says the KTC's Wes Watt.

SAR to conduct fund-raising
grilling session at Archives
The local Sons of the Revolution chapter will provide good food as a fundraiser on Friday, April 13. The new group will grill pork loin and bratwurst for sandwiches and snack packs in the lawn of the Logan County Archives across from the Russellville Post Office from 10:30-2. Prices are shown in the accompanying flier.

Toppers ready to play in NIT semifinals
Tipoff time is upon us! Western's Hilltoppers will play Utah in Final Four of the NIT at Madison Square Garden at 6 p.m. today. It's the biggest game in 10 years for WKU (that one against Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love in the NCAA second round), and maybe in 47 years (Coach Johnny Oldham's 1971 team, featuring the late Jim McDaniels) in the NCAA Final Four at Houston. It will be aired on ESPN's primary channel.

Cougars beat BGH 6-2 in
battle of state-ranked teams
The Logan County Cougars, who are ranked 15th in the state, beat 16thranked Bowling Green 6-2 in the season opener. Ethan Smock pitched the first four innings, giving up only 3 hits and striking out 8. Nick Wooden pitched long relief, and newcomer Riley Ferguson got the save by pitching a scoreless final inning. Elijah Justice, Braxton Meguiar, Third Bell and Wooden each got a hit for Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars. Charlie Key took the loss on the mound. Joe Howard had two hits for the losing Purples.

underway as election grows nearer
The 2018 primary elections in Kentucky will be held in less than two months on Tuesday, May 22. So far, six candidates have taken advantage of the early advertising special on The Logan Journal. Three of them are candidates for First District Magistrate—Republicans William ‘Russ’ Sharp and incumbent Dickie Carter along with Democrat Tyler Davenport. Other advertisers are Second District Magistrate Democratic candidate Mike Weldon, Democrat Steven Stratton, who is running for Sheriff, and Republican Mary Orange, who is unopposed in the Republican primary for Circuit Clerk but is already advertising. Bill Walton talks with Toppers at USC
While preparing for their National Invitation Tournament second round game tonight against top seeded Southern California (24-11) in Los Angeles, the WKU Toppers (25-10) were visited by arguably the greatest college basketball player of all-time, Bill Walton, who was the center on three of UCLA's national championship teams under Coach Johnny Wooden. Walton will provide color commentary on ESPN tonight for the game, which doesn't begin until 10:30. If Coach Rick Stansbury's team wins, the Toppers will play in the bracket finals at Oklahoma State Wednesday, The University of Louisville will play visiting Mississippi State in a bracket finals Tuesday after Coach David Padgett's Cardinals crushed Middle Tennessee Sunday, ending Coach Kermit Davis' tenure in Murfreesboro. Davis has accepted the head coaching job at Ole Miss.

Russellville Schools on two-hour delay Monday
Russellville Independent Schools will be OPEN on a 2-hour delay Monday, according to Superintendent Bart Flener. Stevenson Elementary will begin at 9:30 a.m,, and RJSHS will begin at 10. School buildings will be open at regular times if parents need to drop their student off early by vehicle.

Library to be closed most of next week
Sunday not only marks the first day of Daylight Saving Time but also the first of five days during the week and six for the month that Logan County Public Library will be closed. Sunday, March11, through Thursday, March 15, the library will be "Closed for Inventory." Then Friday, March 30, the doors will be locked for Staff Development. Deer Lick Road reopened
Crews have been able to reopen KY 107 Deer Lick Road in Logan County following weeks of a closure due to a culvert failure near mile pint 3.4. The travel area over the culvert is still gravel at this time so motorists need to use caution and slow down while traveling over it. Full asphalt will be put down, but crews wanted to reopen the roadway as quickly as possible due to the long detour.

Joining him will be Jamie Reed of South Oldham, Jon Clark of Madison Southern, Joe Chirico of Paintsville and Justin Haddix of Corbin. They will discuss techniques, styles and philosophies.

E’town ends Bowling Green's state play
Basketball season ended for the Bowling Green Lady Purples Wednesday in Northern Kentucky when BGH lost to highly regarded Elizabethtown 62-41. Coach Donnie Swinney's Panthers improved their record to 34-2. This marks the end of his first season at Bowling Green for Coach Calvin Head, who last year was athletic director, softball coach and girls basketball coach at Russellville.

NCAA-bound Lipscomb Bisons
have Russellville Connection
With the crowning of Lipscomb University as Atlantic Sun Conference men’s basketball champion, the NCAA Tournament now has a Russellville Connection. Freshman reserve point guard Zach Flener is the son of Russellville Superintendent Bart Flener and his wife Candace. Zach was a star player for the Murray High School team which was state All A Classic runner-up in 2016 with his dad as coach. Lipscomb won at Florida Gulf Coast 108-96 Sunday afternoon to earn the school’s first national tournament berth since joining the NCAA. The Bisons were a national NAIA power under the late Coach Don Meyer but struggled as an NCAA member until the hiring of Coach Casey Alexander, who is a former star point guard and assistant coach at Lipscomb’s long-time rival Belmont University under Coach Rick Byrd. Lipscomb and OVC champion Murray State have to wait a week to see their seedings and pairings in the Big Dance, as does ACC women’s champion Louisville, coached by WKU graduate Jeff Walz.

Head's Lady Purples headed to state
A year ago, Coach Calvin Head's Russellville Lady Panthers were eliminated in the first round of the Fourth Region Tournament at Diddle Arena. Saturday night, Head's Bowling Green Lady Purples joined him in cutting down the Diddle nets after beating one of the state's top-ranked teams, South Warren, in the championship game. South Warren, which finished 31-4, led 45-35 after three quarters, but BGH (20-12) took the final period 24-6 to win 59-51. Coach Blaine Embry's Lady Spartans had beaten Head's team three times this season. Former Russellville point guard Chloe Elam is an assistant coach for the Lady Purples, who will go against Elizabethtown Wednesday afternoon.
