A popular and historically successful older event in Logan County has become a new event of the Logan County Tobacco & Heritage Festival. Relay for Life is moving from a spring date to Oct. 6, the first weekend of the biggest celebration in the county each year.

This year’s theme is “Hope Starts at Home.”

The Relay, which raises funds for cancer research, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Logan County Ag Arena, adjacent to the Extension Office.

Some teams have been holding fund-raising events for months while others are just getting started. There’s still time for the formation of new teams.

In the early days of Relay for Life here, activities went on from dusk until sunrise at the Logan County High School Football Field. This year Relay won’t last into the morning hours.

Some of the teams which have drawn praise from organizers include Fast Pace Urgent Care, Therapeutic Pain Management, the City of Russellville, Emerson Electric, Logan Memorial Hospital, Walnut Grove Church, Auburn Healthcare, Gerald Printing-Russellville and First Southern National Bank.

The sponsoring American Cancer Society is getting a big lift this year from the Logan County Chamber of Commerce and Logan County Tourism. The ladies who work in leadership roles for those organizations—Terrie Lawson of the cancer society, Karen Logan and Pandora Christian of the chamber, and Dee Dee Brown of tourism—are dynamic and enthusiastic. They make things happen.

The goal is 30 teams which raise an average of $4,333.33 each, which would total $130,000.

In addition to teams raising money, organizers hope individuals and businesses will make donations, even if they don’t field a team to walk that night.

Luminaries are being sold in various sizes. They are used to honor cancer survivors and in memoriam for victims of cancer.
