Thousands of people will gather in Russellville’s Hampton Park, the West Kentucky African American Museums, the KP Hall, and in homes all over Logan County for this celebration of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in the 19th century.
In its over three decades in Russellville, this has become a huge homecoming for many families.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Living the Legacy.”
Friday’s activities include the “Taste of Culture” at Kathy’s Hair Salon during the morning hours, the opening rounds of the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, kids’ activities including bouncers beginning at 3 p.m., and a concert featuring Dexter Allen presented by Russellville Blues during the evening hours at the museum on Sixth and Morgan.
WRUS’ Traveling Road Show will be on the air from 5:30-7 interviewing Celebration participants before the concert begins. Chris McGinnis will be set up at the museum.
Saturday’s activities include a golf scramble at Rolling Hills, a Flag Ceremony at 10 a.m., a Run/Walk, and the Emancipation Parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the corner of Fifth and Spring streets. Bettye Benton is the parade marshal.
Also on Saturday are a men’s softball tournament, a cornhole tournament, and games, free school supplies, music and concessions at Hampton Park.
Leaders include Paulette Smith, Perry Dillard, Linda Yancey, Patrick Temple, Andrae Edmonds, Monty Bell, Andrae Woodard, Larry Hampton and Kathy Edmonds.
