RHS Panthers visit WKU

The array of college tour trips for Russellville Jr/Sr High School students under new College an Career Coach Tracy Naylor began this past Friday. A bus load of juniors and seniors traveled to Bowling Green where they toured Western Kentucky University’s campus. When the students arrived on campus, they met their enthusiastic tour guide. After introductions, she gave the group an all-inclusive tour of the school. Students visited the Recreation Center where college students have an enormous facility to engage a multitude of physical activities; it’s connected to the Preston Center workout facility. One of the college’s unique attributes is the center’s services are free to use and even include such things as checking out outdoor weekend equipment such as kayaks.

Moving from the Preston Center, the group caught sight of the tallest building in Bowling Green, the Pearce-Ford Tower, which is an all-girls dormitory. Throughout the day, students visited the Downing Student Union, the Raymond Cravens Library, Douglas Keen Hall, and had the opportunity to go inside of a model dorm. Before the tour came to an end, students met WKU’s Admissions Counselor, Rachel Richter. She gave an informational presentation that covered college admission, scholarships, and answered questions.

Each student walked away with more knowledge and experience about college than when they walked in. The group said their goodbyes and left to treat themselves at the Greenwood Mall food court after a long day of college preparation. The students were well-behaved and are eager for the next college tours in the 2018-2019 school year!

Newspaper

Newsletter contributors are working hard interviewing students, researching editorial articles, and covering events around the school to incorporate into the upcoming school newspaper website. The RJSHS student newspaper is starting a new website, but don’t worry the newsletter will continue with new student editors each week. Along with articles and a new website, we are looking to students and teachers for help choosing a name. Panthers can find QR codes around the middle and high school hallways and next to classrooms that they can scan and vote for their favorite newspaper name.  

Student Council

Wednesday during Panther Den, high schoolers running for Student Council presented speeches in front of their respective grades. In these speeches, candidates explained why they should be chosen to represent the Russellville High School student body. Votes were collected on Thursday, Aug. 30, for the seniors, but grades 9 through 11 voted on Friday the 31st. Also, on Friday after lunch, the results were announced. Winners for each grade consist of:

FCA

FCA stands for Fellowship of Christians Athletes. Their mission is to offer a voluntary-based chance for coaches and athletes, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of fellowship of the church. Addie Cundiff attended the FCA leader training on Aug. 25. She learned an array of valuable skills to bring back to Russellville Junior-Senior High School to help lead and grow FCA.

PSAT

Sophomore and junior students wishing to take the PSAT should begin signing up in the front office. This test is a National Merit Scholarship Qualifier. Cost of the test is $15 and must be paid to the Guidance Office by Sept. 11. For more information, please see Mr. Rex Booth.

Sports Happenings                                                                

Football

Friday night, Aug.24, the Panthers took on the Fort Campbell Falcons. After leading the entire game, they were able to bring home a win with a score of 28-3. The Panthers are looking to continue their winning streak.  

Update: The Panthers brought home another win on Friday night against the Butler County Bears. An upcoming feature will cover all of the highlights from the Panthers home opener.

Soccer

On Aug. 27, the Russellville soccer team played the Muhlenberg Mustangs at home. Although Kevin Vera, the leading scorer for the Panthers, was absent they still managed to come away with another win to make their record 4-2-1.

With the release of three new hip-hop albums in the month of August, Russellville Junior-Senior High School students have been spoiled with new music to jam to. Whether you like the artists or not, they have not failed to get sales from fans around the world. Here is a little information about the top three selling hip-hop albums in August:

Astroworld by Travis Scott: Released on August 3rd, Astroworld includes 17 tracks with features from Frank Ocean, 21 Savage, Quavo and more. It currently is number 2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart with more than 200,000 sales.

Queen by Nicki Minaj: Producing the fourth album of her career, Nicki Minaj released Queen on August 10th. Sitting at number 3 on the Billboard top 200 albums chart, it has over 185,000 sales assisted by collaborations with Eminem, Future, Lil Wayne, and  more.

Sweetener by Ariana Grande: Ranked number 1 on the Billboard Charts for top 200 albums, Sweetener has over 230,000 sales in the US. With the release on August 17th, Ariana broke a streaming record with over 126 million audio streams in just the first week alone. More records and numbers are soon to come with the help and of features from Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, and Missy Elliot.
