Tim Riley leaving Central for Lady Toppers
The most successful coach in 4th Region basketball history is leaving for the college ranks. Tim Riley, who has won 338 games as a head coach,
24 of his last 25 regional games, 8 regional titles and a state championship in 3 Final Four appearances, has been named an assistant coach onMary Taylor Cowles' WKU Lady Topper staff. He is the son of Auburn native Jean Drake Rileyand retired LCHS/Chandlers teacher Douglas Riley. The highly difficult task of naming a suitable successor falls on Olmstead graduate Todd Steward, the Central athletic
director.
Kimberly Baugh named RHS valedictorian
Kimberly Baugh
was named valedictorian of Russellville High School at this weekend's commencement exercises. Matthew Oakley & Sarah Fox tied for
salutatorian while the faculty chose Phillip Clemons for the prestigious deGraffenried Award. The top three students in the eighth grade were Kelsey Patterson, Rach-el Fisher & Wesley Stratton.
D.J. Quarles invited to walk on UK football
D.J. Quarles
, a four-year basketball starter and a solid contributor n three major sports for Russellville High School, has been invited to walk on the University
of Kentucky football team by Coach Joker Phillips. The son of Derrick & Meca Quarles, D.J. has received The
William C. Parker Minority Scholarship at UK. This is a $40,000 scholarship.

Home Makeover pondering Auburn Wounded Warrior
ABC's "Extreme Home Makeover" has asked Auburn Minit Mart to do interviews with community members about why J.D. & Ashlee Williams deserve a
new home in this area; how proud the people of Logan County are of them, and how their service to the United States is appreciated. Sgt. Williams was
severely injured while on Mideast deployment. Producers have asked for interviews from people from all walks of life. “If you would like to contribute
your thoughts to this important mission, please come by the store on Thursday, June 2 from 9 a.m.-noon," says Lynne Thomas, a family friend and
co-worker of Mrs. Williams at Minit Mart.
Barren County ends Logan springs sports season
Barren County beat the Logan County Cougars 8-3 in the first round of the 4th Region baseball tournament Monday, ending the spring sports season in the
Land of Logan. The Cougars picked up 7 hits, all singles, with Ryan Harper & Ian Woodall each getting 2. Ryan Steenbergen drove in a
pair of runs on a pinch hit. Matt Harper & Dustin Cartas added the other hits. StarterLawton Jackson took the loss. Thomas Miller & Dustin Nash relieved. Coach Ethan Meguiar's 13th District champions finished 22-11.
Cpl. Moore's mother quoted about his heroic death

Cougar Basketball Camp offered next week
The Logan County High School Boys Basketball Camp will be held next Monday through Wednesday (June 6-8) for grades 3-5 (10 a.m.-noon) and grades 6-8

Cougars to play Barren County in regional
If it's Memorial Day, the Logan County Cougars must be playing baseball. Coach Ethan Meguiar's 13th District champions (22-10) will play Barren
County (17-19) at 1 p.m. Monday at WKU's Nick Denes Field. They have played twice this year with Logan winning 6-5 in March and 2-1 May 19. The Trojans
are coached by veteran Johnny Vance. The Cougars are in the bracket with Warren East (25-12), which won't have to use its ace against Cumberland
County (10-21), Logan will start either Lawton Jackson or Dustin Nash, who have completed 17 of the 18 games they've started this year,
according to pitching coach Mike Hoots. A win would send the Cougars into Tuesday's 5 p.m. semifinal.

wife Kathryn and sons Luke and Micah are moving there this week. Micah was born this month. Services today are at 9:30 a.m. and 1
p.m. with a farewell meal in betwen. Youth Minister Daniel McCarley and elderCharles Roney, who was the congregation's minister for 18
years, will do the bulk of the preaching until a successor is chosen.

Russellville High School and the holder of three degrees from the University of Kentucky. The author of “Use Your Buckets, Twelve Life Lessons for
Success,” Dr. Glass is a life coach, speaking coach, and diversity consultant who previously taught at Kentucky State and now lives in Murfreesboro,
Tenn.

Hines, Hampton win state track titles for RHS
The fastest girl in Kentucky Class A track is a 7th grader from Russellville. Diamond Hines won the state championship this week, running the
100 meters in 12.87. She was 4th in the 200 at 26.87 and finished as the 16th best team in Class A by herself. Also a state champion from RHS is senior Victor Hampton, who won the high jump with a leap of 6'2", two inches better than 2nd placeThomas Kendall of Monroe County. The next best
finish for RHS was a 6th by Quinton Calloway in the triple jump. Matt Tipton is in his 38th year as the Lady Panthers' coach. Dennis Sydnor, a key member of the 1975 RHS state champion team, is the Panthers' coach.

Cougars beat F-S 3-2 for district baseball title
Freshman Ian Woodall drove in Justin Hopkins with the winning run in the 6th inning, and Dustin Nash shut Franklin-Simpson down in
order in the 7th as the Logan County Cougars edged F-S 3-2 in the 13th District baseball championship game Thursday at Elkton. Ryan Harper and John Logan Dockins had homered for the Cougars' other two runs. Hopkins was running for Dustin Cartas, who led off the
6th with a single. After Dockins walked, Harper and Woodall hit ground balls to move Hopkins home. Nash didn't walk a Wildcat, fanning 4. The Cougars
played errorless ball. Dylan Richardson pitched and had 3 hits for F-S.Taylor Gregory homered for the Cats. The regional draw is
Saturday.
LCHS graduation Sunday, guidelines in place
Graduation exercises for Logan County High School’ seniors will be Sunday, May 29, at 2 p.m. in the main gym. The graduates need to be in
line no later than 1 p.m., says Principal Casey Jaynes. For their safety, students are urged not to wear flip-flop sandals. Dress pants or
slacks are preferred for boys while dress pants, slacks or dresses for girls.
Graduates, their families and friends are asked not to bring or use any noise-making device that will distract or disrupt the graduation celebration. A
professional photographer will take individual pictures as graduates receive their diplomas. With the recent amount of rain, parking on the grass at
LCHS will be prohibited. Law enforcement officials will direct traffic. Parking in any roadway or along any yellow curb is not permitted. Handicapped
parking will be available.

Franklin beats RHS 8-3, to face Logan in today's finals
Franklin-Simpson built a 7-0 lead and beat Russellville 8-3 in the 13th District Baseball Tournament Wednesday. For the 9th time in the 11 years of
this century, Logan County (21-10) and F-S (20-11) will meet in the district finals, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.. Hayden Williams led the
Cats with 3 hits and 3 runs. Zack Thomas pitched the win with relief help from Dalton James. Thomas Shifflett and Seth Washington each doubled & singled for RHS (15-11) while D.J. Quarles, Layton Bush, Caleb Wills, Drew Hayes and Barrett Croslin
all got hits. Wills and Corey Wright pitched for Coach Lou Kendall'sPanthers..

Todd Central, F-S advance to softball finals
The games were very different but the results were ultimately the same--teams from the Land of Logan were eliminated in the 13th District Softball
Tournament at LCHS Tuesday. Franklin-Simpson beat Russellville 15-0 in 3 innings.Todd Central held off Logan 7-6. Then F-S won over Todd 8-4 in the
finals later that evening.
Logan fell behind 4-0 and then took the lead 5-4 on consecutive doubles by Maddie Abbott & Robyn Estes. Hits by Lauren Addison, Taylor Gilliland, Natalie Perry and Kayla Watkins put Todd up 7-5. Shortstop Aleica Croft and third baseman Abbott kept it close on a goud play. With 2 outs Victoria Cates tripled for Logan and scored on a passed ball. Abbott walked and Estes gave the
ball a ride, but it was caught in centerfield to end the game. Logan's all-season performers were Estes, Croft and Jonique Smith.
Chelsey Johnson
was the only RHS baserunner, working a walk in the 2nd inning. Laura Grace Marksberry was the pitcher for the young RHS team. Megan Woodson & Brittany Hampton were the RHS representatives on the all-season team.
Also all-district were Karla & Kelli Wimpee, Hannah Cowan, & Mallory Johnson of F-S and Brandi Mallory, Bishop
& Perry of Todd.
Cougars win 14-2, advance to finals, region
Scoring 9 runs after 2 outs in the 2nd inning, the Logan County Cougars eliminated host Todd Central 14-2 in the first round of the 13th District
baseball tournament Monday. Ryan Harper powered a 3-run homer in the 1st inning. In the 2nd, Todd pitcherJordan Walters, who had already
struck out John Logan Dockins once, was one strike away from doing it again. But Dockins doubled in 3 runs. By the time relief pitcher Jason Fort got Dockins to pop up nine batters later, the Cougars had scored 11 runs in the inning. They came on an RBI single by Harper, walks
to Ian Woodall & Brandon Sowell, a 2-run double by winning pitcher Lawton Jackson, an RBI double by Jacob Hopkins, an
RBI single by Dustin Nash and an RBI double by Matt Harper. Dustin Cartas walked twice and reached on an error,
Russellville's game with Franklin-Simpson was postponed to Tuesday because of rain.

and Walters got the only hits Jackson allowed to Todd, which finished 6-18. Logan improved to 21-10.

Sansom competes with the best in NCAA regional
Freshman Paul Sansom of Russellville played in the NCAA Regional Golf Tournament at Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. last week, shooting 76 83 78 237.
His Middle Tennessee State University team earned an at-large bid and finished 10th in the region.UCLA won the regional with USC 2nd, San Diego 3rd,
Ohio State 4th and Texas 5th. Sansom played in every MTSU match but one in this, his rookie collegiate season.
Track teams shine at region, headed to state
The Russellville boys and Logan County girls each finished 3rd in their regional track meets Saturday while the Cougar boys placed 4th. Nineteen Logan
athletes qualified for the state 2A meet at the University of Louisville track this weekend while 10 RHS runners are eligible for the 1A state meet at
the same field. The top hopes at state for Logan are Barrett Rogers (ranked 2nd in the 800), the 4 X 800 relay team of Sye Head, Maurice Pheal, Noah Thomas & Rogers (ranked 3rd), the 4 X 400 team ofAvrey Collier, Colton Spencer, Pheal & Rogers
(5th), Head (7th in the 1600), Markita Pheal (7th in the 400) and regional champ Collier (10th in 110 hurdles). Other Logan runners headed to
state are
Jessica Covington, Kelsey Markham, Taylor Oates, Elaina Hopkins, Leah Thompson, Spencer Parsons, Jessica Anderson, Cody Thurston, Brittany Harper,
Aaron Johnson, Cory Ford and Kaleb O'Dell.
Logan qualified for state in 14 events.
Victor Hampton
, who won the regional high jump, is the Panthers' top seed at state (4th). The 4 X 100 relay team of LeeMarcus Brandshaw, Devonta Bryant, Demarcus Hampton and Victor Hampton is ranked 7th. Seventh grader Diamond Hines is ranked 6th in the
200. Also going to state are Quinton Calloway, Devonn Sydnor, Antonio Todd, Ron Todd & Micah Wilkerson. RHS qualified in 11
events.

The Logan County Republican Women's Club will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p m at the Headquarters on Main Street in Russellville. The recipients of the Logan

Some of the top baseball performers in the region will play Monday in 13th District Tournament at Todd Central. The Bowling Green Daily News
invites teams to submit their stats. Only six teams participated, but among them Logan County's Dustin Cartasis 1st in batting average (.462),
tied with Russellville's Thomas Shifflett for 2nd in hits (42) and is 3rd in RBIs (34). Shifflett is also 3rd in hitting (.435). Cougar John Logan Dockins is 7th in hits (34), 8th in RbIs (27) and 6th in pitching record (4-2). Logan'sLawton Jackson leads in pitching record
(6-2) and is 4th in ERA (2.36). D.J. Quarles of RHS is 7th in batting (.405) and 10th in hits (310). Cougar Dustin Nash is 6th in ERA
(2.78) and 8th in pitching record (4-3). Logan 8th grader Matt Harper is tied with Nash for 6th in RBI (28) and stands 8th in average (.395).
Also from RHS Corey Wright is 5th in RBIs (29) and Seth Washington 4th in batting average (.426). Logan's Brandon Sowell is 2nd in ERA (1.49), Thomas Miller 8th at 3.00 andRyan Basham 10th (3.11). Other schools reporting were Bowling

Steve Gilliam to speak at FCA service Sunday
A Fellowship of Christian Athletes service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Russellville this Sunday at 11: a.m. Steve Gilliam, a
1974 graduate of Russellville High School who is a veteran coach and educator, will be the speaker. He is the son ofGlenn and Linda Gilliam. A
student from RHS and one from Logan County High School will be honored and presented a scholarship award.
No Clash in district baseball opening round
Pairings have been made for the 13th District Baseball Tournament to be played at Todd Central next week. Top-seeded Logan County will meet the host
Rebels at 5 Monday with 2nd seeded Franklin-Simpson taking on defending champ Russellville in the nightcap. The championship game is scheduled for 5:30
Tuesday.

Impact, a new U16 boys travel soccer team from Logan, took first place at the Owensboro Kick for the Cure tournament last week-end. Impact defeated

her twin sister Meg had a big lead in their match when she fell.
Lon Sosh to undergo heart tests Friday
WRUS radio personality Lon Sosh is to undergo a scope procedure Friday to determine if the bacteria in his blood stream has damaged valves. He
had overcome several serious problems to return to the air early this month, but his stay was cut short after three days. He wants to celebrate his
53rd year of broadcasting starting June 2.

District softball tournament to be played in one night
The 13th District Softball Tournament will be played Tuesday, May 24 at Logan County High School. Coach Steve Cauley'stop-seeded
Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats will take on Russellville at 5. The second-seeded Todd Central Lady Rebels are to meet host Logan County 30 minutes later.
The championship game is to start 30 minutes after the second semifinal.
Tonight's Civil War documentary has Logan ties
Great musical performances by some of Nashville’s most talented artists are blended with incredible and emotional stories, offering television viewers
a unique perspective of the Civil War in a documentary that premiers tonight on Nashville Public Television (Channel 8). The documentary was produced
by Steve Hall, son-in-law of Geneva and Otis Bilbrey of Logan County.
Civil War Songs and Stories
is scheduled for broadcast at 7 p.m. on both May 18 and 27. The program is produced by the award-winning multimedia team at the Renaissance Center, in
Dickson, which has partnered with NPT to develop a series of documentaries marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Actor David Keith narrates the documentary.
The program features modern interpretive performances by such artists as the legendary Crystal Gayle and American Idol sensationBo Bice, William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys, and Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers. Other artists include Irish Folk Singer Maura O’Connell, the Fisk Jubilee Singers and Jason Ringenberg of Jason and the Scorchers.
Hall is the husband of Lewisburg graduate Fadocia Annette Nole Hall.
Johnson, Comer win GOP nominations; Walker loses

of Todd County won the Republican nomination for Secretary of State Tuesday, but he won't be facing former Bowling Green mayor Elaine Walker in
November. Johnson upset one of the Democratic party's long-time leaders, Hilda Legg, while Walker fell to Alison Lundergan Grimes, a
political foe of Gov. Steve Beshear. Jamie Coker of Monroe County is the GOP nominee for commissioner of agriculture and will face Bob Farmer in November. Beshear will be opposed by David Williams for governor. Fewer than 7 percent of Logan's registered voters cast
ballots, according to WRUS.

The Logan County Relay for Life Committee is asking that all citizens and businesses in Logan County put out purple ribbons, bows, etc. from June 6-18.
"Put them on your doors, cars, mailboxes - anywhere you can think of to bring attention to our Relay for Life walk to be held June 17 at Logan County

Local tennis players get opening round regional wins
Several tennis players from the Land of Logan won opening round matches at regional tennis tournaments in Bowling Green Monday. In boys singles
Russellville's John David Reeves won 6-2, 7-5 over Logan County's Hunter Boswell but CougarLogan Johnson romped 6-1, 6-1. Both
Cougar doubles teams were winners: Evan Harris/Jake Neiman won 7-6, 6-3.andDalton Gunderson/Cory Jones 6-2, 6-3. Lady Panther Kesi Neblett was the only winner among local girls entrants at 6-2, 6-1. Lady Cougar Anna Wilkins fell 7-5 in the third set of a marathon
match.

City preschool named in Kaye Wilkins' honor
At a retirement reception in her honor Sunday, Kaye Warren Wilkins received a number of honors, including the Stevenson Elementary School
preschool being named Kaye W. Wilkins Preschool. About 300 friends, colleagues, church members, and retired educators attended. She was made a Kentucky
Colonel, and was given a citation from the Kentucky House of Repre-sentatives by Rep. Martha Jane King. The guest speaker was Jane Stevenson Broyles, the daughter of the R. E. Stevensons. Retired Superintendent Jim Young was the master of ceremonies, Board
Chairman James Milam made a special presentation, former superintendent Donna Preston, who drove from Louisville to attend, and current
Superintendent Leon Smithspoke. Board member David Corbin led the invocation.
Logan tennis doubles teams seeded at region
The top doubles teams representing Logan County High School have earned seedings in the regional tournaments, which begin Monday night. Twins Brenna and Meg Brown are seeded 5th in the girls meet, which will be played at Kereiakes Park. Evan Harris and Jake Neiman are seeded 6th
in the boys tourney at Bowling Green High.
Also competing in regionals will be singles players John David Reeves, McLean Shutt and Kesi Neblett of Russellville andAnna Wilson, Mason Gregory, Hunter Boswell and Logan Johnson of LCHS along with Cougar doubles teams Dalton Gunderson/Cory Jones and Hales/Lindsey Stahl. Logan County Girls Basketball Camp slated
Lady Cougar Basketball Team will be conducting its annual basketball skills camp June 7-10 in the auxiliary gym. The camp is for all girls entering kindergarten thru 8th grade for the 2011-2012 school year from any school system or home school program. Campers
are instructed on the fundamentals of ballhandling, dribbling, passing, shooting, and other drills they can take home to work on their game. Cost is
$45 per player with each pre-registered camper receiving a camp t-shirt and four days of individual instruction from the high school staff and players.

deGraffenried Chorale spring concert Sunday
The deGraffenried Chorale will present its spring concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist Temple, 7th & Main streets, in Russellville. The

LCHS Principal Jaynes chosen for leadership training

, principal of Logan County High School, is among 48 Kentucky school leaders who will receive executive-level leadership training at an institute
funded by the state’s business community through the Kentucky Chamber Foundation and a grant from the AT&T Foundation. Jaynes' participation in the
Leadership Institute for School Principals pilot program is sponsored by a generous contribution from Logan Aluminum Inc. “This is a wonderful
opportunity for myself and for the students of Logan County High School,” said Jaynes. He and the other selected principals will attend classes this
summer at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C., a top-ranked global provider of executive education. The principals will also attend
follow-up sessions in the fall and early next year in Kentucky.
“The AT&T Foundation’s focus is to keep kids in school. We felt that the Leadership Institute was a perfect pilot program to see if leadership
training for principals can make a difference in school systems,” said Mary Pat Regan, AT&T Kentucky president.

A reception for long-time Russellville Schools’ administrator Kaye Warren Wilkins will be held from 2-4 p.m. in the Stevenson Elementary School
cafeteria. Among her many roles in the system was serving as the SES principal. "A short ceremony will be held at 2 in recognition of Kaye's years of
service to this district," says Board Chairman James Milam.

pitched the shutout and Dustin Nash had a pair of extra-base hits in the 16-hit Cougar attack. John Logan Dockins & Matt Harper had
early RBIs. Coach Ethan Meguiar's team is 5-1 in the district. So is Franklin-Simpson, which held off Russellville 12-8 Tuesday. RHS is 2-4 in

Logan Memorial Hospital will host a reception honoring Kentucky Secretary of State Elaine N. Walker on Friday. The community is invited to
attend. The informal event will allow Walker to discuss efforts to grow business and expand jobs throughout the state. A catered meal will be served
from noon-1 p.m. A former mayor of Bowling Green, Walker is running for a full-term and has opposition in both the primary and general elections. For

Meg Brown wins singles title in Logan tennis tourney
Junior Meg Brown of host Logan County won the girls singles title in the Logan County Invitational Saturday, defeating Cassidy White of
Grayson County is the championship match, 7-5, 6-2.

Cougars win SKY track title; girls relay honored
Logan County boys track finished as SKY Conference Champions this past Saturday and our girls placed 3rd, finishing just 5.5 points out of 2 nd and receiving a trophy. The girls 4 X 400M Relay (Markita Pheal, Kelsey Markham, Taylor Oates, Claire Hopkins) was named
SKY Relay of the Year.The boys earned SKY Team of the Year. From that team the boys (Maurice Pheal, Sye Head, Noah Thomas, Barrett Rogers) won 4 X 800M Relay Team of the Year along with Avery Collier being named 110M
Hurdler of the Year and Conner Edwards was named Javelin Thrower of the Year.

Logan County won with 109.5 points, 15.5 ahead of second place Bowling Green. Following them were Edmonson County with76, South Warren 62, Greenwood
41, Warren East 49, Franklin-Simpson 41, Allen County Scottsville 35, Russellville 27 and Butler County 25.5.
Eighth graders Krysten Flatt and Cambria Faulkner placed 2nd and 3rd respectively representing Logan in the shot put. Bowling
Green and East were the only teams placing ahead of the Lady Cougars.
The Panthers' Quinton Calloway won the triple jump, and Diamond Hines of Russelllville placed third in the 200.
Meg Brown wins LCR Tennis Invitational
On Saturday, May 7, six high schools from Kentucky competed in the 2011 LCR Invitational. Players represented Clinton County, Daviess County, Grayson
County, University Heights, as well as host schools Logan County and Russellville. Logan County’sMeg Brown won the girls singles tournament,
defeating Cassidy White of Grayson County is the championship match, 7-5, 6-2.

Cougars win 9-1 at RHS

gave up just one run on seven hits as the Logan County Cougars completed a sweep of the Clash of the Cats 9-1 at Kelly Russell Field.Ryan Harper tripled and singled, Dustin Cartas smacked three doubles for Coach Ethan Meguiar’sCougars, and Matt Harper and John Logan Dockins joined him with doubles. Lawton Jackson, Ryan Basham and Brandon Sowell, who scored three runs, all
had a hit. Caleb Wills and Tyler Hall pitched for the Panthers. Seth Washington and Corey Wright each had two hits for Coach Lou Kendall’s Panthers. Drew Hayes, D.J. Quarles and Thomas Shifflettadded a hit each. Barrett Croslin scored the run that
Shifflett drove in.

Coach Greg Howard has announced honors for members of his Logan County track teams. The following athletes and the events they earned “Elite”
status are as follows;
Barrett Rogers “ELITE” Status 400M run, 800M run, 4 X 200M Relay, 4 X 400M Relay, 4 X 800M Relay Barrett ran an incredible time of 2:02 this last
weekend, one of the fastest in the state in the 800M.
