Cougars shut out Panthers to reach district soccer finals

Nicholas Petrie scored three goals and Ethan Haley two while Parker Bray and Kaleb Justice combined in goal on a shutout, as the Logan County Cougars beat Russellville 10-0 in the 13th District Tournament at Rhea Stadium Monday.

Coach Eric Evans’ team will play Franklin-Simpson in the championship game at 7:30 Thursday on that same Ken Barrett Field. F-S eliminated Todd Central in Monday’s other match.

Haley and Petrie also each had an assist for the Cougars against RHS with Cameron Fagan leading the way with a pair of assists. Garrett Wilhelm scored a goal and added an assist.

Also scoring goals were Seth Burchett, Jon Allen Cherry and Isaac Phillips. Adding assists were Thomas Bilyeu and Dalton Taylor.

Also playing for the Cougars in the win were Lucas Arevalo, Camden Bond, Dylan Borders, Luke Davenport, Austin Elamon, Logan Harris, Jade Hayes, Conner Hopkins, Evan Hughes, Mark Lynch, Zachary Matthews, Isaac Phillips and Lucas Taylor.

The Cougars improved their record to 7-9-1. It as their third straight 10-0 win over the Panthers. Half of their goals this year have come against RHS.

Coach Stephen Abdelfarag’s Franklin team has a 9-5 record with seven of the nine wins coming against district opponents. The Wildcats also won 10-0 over Todd. Franklin-Simpson has gotten much better late in the season. The Cats are on a four-match win streak, including a 10-0 win over the Cougars on Sept, 26. In the first encounter between the two finalists, F-S won 6-3.

Coach Jeramy Rust does not report individual statistics for his Panthers, who finished 1-13 on the season. The regular home season ended on a high note, however, when RHS beat Todd Central 7-2 on Sept. 27. All but one of the goals Russellville scored this season came against the Rebels.

Listed as Panther soccer plays on the KHSAA Scoreboard are Hunter Armistead, Eraldo Barrios, Ashton Cosner, Kaleb Coursey, Brandon Johns, Kenyon Kerr, Brett Kinser, Weihang No, Alexis Pacheco, Louis Pacheco, Sok Vanna, Kevin Vera and Alejandro Zepeda.
