A group of Logan County Cougar football players won the Corey Peters Lineman Challenge in Louisville this spring in competition with 17 other teams from 11 schools, most of them from Louisville.
Members of the championship squad were Caden McKinnis, Collier Kempf, Ethan Steenbergen, Myles Kenner, Damon Stephens, Dakota Cardwell, Homero Vazquez and Teon Morris.
Most of them were key players for the Cougars last year. McKinnis won numerous honors while leading the Cougars to an undefeated regular season and the second round of the playoffs. Morris is a former Russellville Panther, a highly regarded defensive tackle and the son of one of Russellville’s top running backs of the 90s, Stacey Morris.
A second team of Cougars placed a strong seventh. They were Jonah Oliver, Luke Brown, Brandon Rimer, Colin Sowell, Nolin Brady, Anthony Dunn, Logan Gipson and Thomas Kash.
“This event is very challenging and it’s a good opportunity to give your lineman a chance to compete as a team in the off season,” says Coach Todd Adler. “The event has 10 different challenges that each team had to compete in, which were either timed, measured on distance, or most reps by a team.”
The competitions were in Bench Press, Relay Race, Tug of War, Farmers’ Walk, Quiz, Medicine Ball Throw, 300-Yard Shuttle, Obstacle Course, Tire Flip and Five-Man Sled.
Other schools involved included Louisville teams Fern Creek, Iroquois, Ballard, Central, Butler, Eastern and Jeffersontown, as well as Boyle County, Danville and Daviess County.
Corey Peters is a former University of Kentucky player who now plays for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.
