After a 2-1 tour of 14th District powers to start the season, the Logan County Cougars came from behind to beat always-tough Glasgow Saturday to get off to a 3-1 start.
It all began with a 5-4 squeaker against visiting South Warren. Braxton Meguiar doubled and singled to lead the offense, but he wasn’t involved in the scoring or RBIs. Third Bell, Koby Wall, Zach Yates and Nate Woodall were all credited with an RBI. Bell scored 2 runs with Parker White, Anthony Woodard and Chandler Silvey each scoring 1.
The only 3 hits the Cougars managed besides Meguiar’s were by Bell, Silvey and Wall. Dylan Penick walked twice and Yates once.
Riley Ferguson was Opening Day pitcher. He worked an out into the sixth inning, giving up 4 runs, 4 hits and a walk while fanning 8. Only a pair of the runs were earned. Wall pitched the remainder of the sixth and one out in the seventh. He allowed 2 hits but no runs and got the win. Blake Wood retired 2 of the 3 batters he faced, striking out 1 and walking 1.
Cougars 5, Greenwood 3
Penick and Meguiar each got 2 hits. Penick doubled, and he drove in 4 runs. Jacob Smock also doubled. White, Silvey and Wall each singled. Bell walked once and scored two runs. Meguiar and Smock joined him in walking. Penick, Meguiar and Wall also scored.
Penick, who is recovering for the second straight season from major injuries, was the winning pitcher. He worked 5 innings of 1-hit, 1-run, 3-walk, 9-strikeout ball. White pitched the final 3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5 Gators. Only one of the runs was earned.
BGH 6, Cougars 2
The Cougars managed 5 hits, and for the third straight game Meguiar was the leading hitter. He doubled twice. Smock doubled and scored a run. Silvey got a hit and a walk. Bell picked up the other hit. White scored the other run.
Wall was the starting and losing pitcher. He allowed 3 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 in 3.2 innings, Wood worked 2 scoreless, hitless innings and struck out 3 Spartans. Trevor Scott pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (just 1 earned) on a hit, 2 walks and a strikeout.
Cougars 18, Glasgow 8
In their first road game of the season, Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team got off to a rough start. This was a day that number one pitcher Ferguson didn’t have his control. He didn’t give up a hit in his brief stay on the mound but he walked 5 Scotties and gave up 6 runs, 4 of them earned.
He gave way to White, who was masterful on the mound. He worked 2.2 innings and only allowed 1 hit and no walks or runs. He was the most effective pitcher. Wood pitched the final 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks along with a strikeout.
Once again, Braxton Meguiar was the top Cougar hitter. He doubled twice among his 4 hits, drove in 7 runs and stole a base. Silvey didn’t get a hit, but he walked 3 times, scored 4 runs and added an RBI. Bell, Woodall and White each doubled among their 2 hits apiece. White scored 3 runs, while Woodall, Penick and Smock scored 2 runs. Penick, Bell and Smock walked twice each. Smock stoke a base.
Braxton Baptiste and Jarrett Sears have also seen action during these first four games.
