A great softball season ended for the Logan County Lady Cougars with an equally great showing in the Fourth Region Tournament Tuesday at WKU. Logan won its opener on a 10-run rule walk-off homer Monday before playing a team which had been in three of the last four regional championship game down to the wire in a 1-run loss in the semifinals.
A couple of freshmen had huge games in the win over Metcalfe County. Lilly Newman’s third hit of the game was a walk-off 2-run homer. She drove in 4 runs and scored 1. Shelby Gettings pitched the complete-game victory, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and just 1 walk while striking out 8. On offense, she doubled among her 2 hits while scoring a run and recording an RBI.
KJ Page and Pressley Harris had 2 hits each. Page tripled and Harris doubled. Kennedy Nichols and Brea Croslin each doubled while Sydney Lee added a hit and Abby Hinton drove in a run. Courtesy runner Hailey Collins scored 3 runs and pinch runner Maddix Mowles 1. Lee scored twice while Croslin and Page added a run each.
Seventh grader Emerson McKinnis, who finished with 50 at bats on the season, walked twice with Gettings and Nichols picking up the other 2 walks.
Every player Coach Mark Wood used in the game was either on base or drove in a run as the Lady Cougars improved their record to 25-6.
South Warren 4, Lady Cougars 3
The Lady Cougars got off to a bad start in the semifinals, giving up 4 runs to fall behind 4-0, but they climbed back into the game. Their season ended with the bases loaded—the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second.
It was that close.
Lee pitched masterfully the final five innings of shutout ball, relieving Gettings.
Freshman Selynna Metcalfe also pitched well for the Lady Spartans in relief of Carrie Enlow after Logan scored three runs off Enlow on a 2-run error and an RBI single by Harris in her last high school game.
But Metcalfe ran into serious trouble with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Page and Croslin each singled, but the speedy Page wasn’t quite quick enough to make it to third, so there were two outs. It was the second hit of the game for both of them.
Lee followed with a bloop hit, sending Croslin to third. South intentionally walked Nichols to load the bases.
In a battle of talented freshmen, Metcalfe got Gettings to force Lee at third to end the game and the Lady Cougars’ season.
Newman and Gettings each picked up a hit and each scored. Collins scored the third run. Nichols walked twice with Harris and McKinnis also walking.
Jessica Bush had 3 hits for South Warren, which reached the regional finals against Warren East for the fourth time in five years.
Warren East ran its record to 33-2 by beating South Warren 6-2 in the championship game. The Lady Raiders had edged Franklin-Simpson 3-0 in the semifinals.
