LCHS boys golf played its third match of the year against district rival Franklin Simpson Wildcats. It was an away match for the Cougars at Kenny Perry’s Country Creek Golf course. Both the Cougar boys and girls played.
Seniors Jordan Baer and Jay Hardison led the way for the boys with scores of 40 each. Junior Eli Forbes finished with a 42, and senior Riley Ferguson shot a 44 to add up the top four scores. Junior Landon Larson shot a 52 to finish up the Cougars’ top five scores. Franklin Simpson had a strong outing from their top two golfers at shooting 36 apiece. Top four scores count and Franklin edged ever so slightly the Cougars by two stokes at 164-166.
Coach Kelley Jordan likes the way his team has been consistent through the first few matches, but he said, ”We need to clean up our big numbers. IF we can take that one big hole away from our scores, then these narrow losses turn into wins.”
For the Cougar girls this was there first match of the year and it looked promising. Freshman Abby-Grace Forbes, who played the #1 spot for the Lady Cougars, shot a 47. Then our middle school 7th grader Emma Fitzgerald which played the #2 spot on the varsity, shot a 57. The Lady Wildcats of Franklin-Simpson had a few more players. The top four averaged less than 49 and the eight golfers averaged 52.
Coach Jordan was absolutely pleased with how the Cougar girls played and held themselves against a regional contender. “Being the first match for these girls, I was really interested to see how they would react to the situation of real live time golf, and not only did they compete well, they have given me a strong expectation to what is to come.”
