Lady Cougars reach district finals for 8th straight season

To reach their eighth straight 13th District Soccer Tournament finals, the Logan County Lady Cougars beat second-year team Russellville 10-0 Monday in the opening round of the tournament being played on their home field.

Coach Barry McReynolds’ team, which is the defending champion, will play Franklin-Simpson at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. F-S eliminated Todd Central 4-0 Tuesday.

Kadyn Costello scored four goals for Logan in the win over the Lady Panthers. Peyton Vanzant had two goals and an assist. Addie Corder, Brianna Shelton, Campbell Hamilton and Morgan Gafford added a goal each. Ella Moore recorded an assist.

Goalkeeper Brady Alsup and the rest of the defense kept the Lady Panthers from getting an official shot on goal.

Also playing for the Lady Cougars were Emma Allen, Camilla Arevalo, Katherine Bratcher, Hannah Brown, Carli Jo Bruner, Keira Costello, Savannah Hayes, Elizabeth Phelps, Harley Robertson, Ellie Sandlin and Autumn Taylor.

Russellville goalkeeper Aliyah Kennedy stopped 13 of the Lady Cougars’ 23 shots.

Also playing for Coach Eric Evans’ Lady Panthers were Jordan Cothern, Anastasia Dowlen, Irulan Evans, Dominica Flowers, Marta Hughes, Makiyah Morrow, Anabel Mueller, Lilly Pacheco and Emily Stapleton.

The Lady Cougars are 2-0 against Franklin. In a 4-3 shootout win on Sept. 3, Logan got three goals from Kadyn Costello and the fourth from Phelps. Shelton recorded an assist and Alsup had six saves in goal.

The on Sept. 24, Logan won 6-1. Costello scored three goals, Vanzant two and Hannah Matthews one with Shelton getting credit for two assists. Alsup seven of eight Lady Wildcat shots on goal.

The Lady Cougars are 10-5 on the season.

Logan has been the district champion six of the past seven seasons.
