Logan County High School has announced the naming of Nathan Thompson as the new Head Boys' Basketball Coach.

"We welcome Coach Thompson into our school and community," said LCHS Athletic Director Greg Howard. "We look forward to continued success in this program and Coach Thompson's ability to help mold great young men."

"I am honored and humbled to lead the LCHS boys basketball program in the 2020-2021 season and into the future," Coach Thompson said. "I am excited to continue to be a part of the Cougar community in this new role, and I look forward to working with the student-athletes to generate success, both on and off the court, today and tomorrow."

Thompson, 37, is a 2001 graduate of Russellville High School. He’s the leading scorer in Panther soccer history and was a key player on Coach Phil Todd’s 2000 and 2001 state Final Four basketball teams. He also played baseball.

He later assisted Todd and Dennis Pardue on the RHS basketball team. He has been head soccer and golf coach at his alma mater. He has also served as the school’s athletic director.

Nathan Thompson and his dad Tom, who was his soccer coach, were both inducted into the Russellville Alumni Association’s Athletic Hall of Fame on the same evening.

Thompson played soccer for both Kentucky Wesleyan and Lindsey Wilson colleges.

He has been associated with the Bowling Green Hornets as both head coach and general manager. He coached the semi-pro basketball team to a league championship. He has also served as vice president of the league.

Nathan Thompson has worked for First Southern National Bank most of his adult life.

Howard had announced earlier in the summer the hiring of Thompson as an assistant girls basketball coach under new head coach Dedra Adler. The boys job came open recently when Coach John Tinsley resigned.

Tinsley’s two LCHS teams had a combined record of 53-11, won both district championships and reached the regional semifinals both years. But 10 of the top 11 players on those teams have graduated.

Thompson has a number of ties to the county school system. His wife, Laura Stokes Thompson, is an LCHS graduate who previously was a teacher in the system. His mom, Sandra Thompson, and his sister, Sarah Ibarra, have worked in the system’s central office. His mother-in-law, Jamie Stokes, is the former food service director for the system.

The Thompsons’ two daughters are students in the county schools.
