Russellville picked up a big district win in boys soccer to start the season Tuesday. The Panthers won 3-1 at Todd Central behind two goals by junior Avery Flener and one by classmate Dustin Brown.

Sophomore Dalton Gilbert earned an assist on Flener’s first goal. Flener’s second goal came on a penalty kick.

Brown’s goal was a thing of beauty on a corner kick that curled into the goal. It proved to be the game winner four minutes into the second half.

Junior goalkeeper Daylan Roberts had nine saves while giving up just one goal to Coach Mike Smith’s Rebels. That came on a high floater into the corner by Grady Reding. Roberts is also an outstanding golf for RHS sports.

“We had several shots just outside the goal by several Panther players,” said Coach Jeramy Rust “Overall we played well and if felt good to get on the field.”

Also seeing action in the win were Milo Brooks, Jacob Farwick, Jose Guerra, Taylor Gwynette, Cameron Lewis, Lazaro Lopez, Askshar Patel, Luke Skipworth, Jeremiah Smith, Talon Stratton, Patrick Summerall and Robin Tran.

Coach Rust notes, “We host a very talented Madisonville-North Hopkins team Thursday at 6:30.”
