Thirteenth District soccer tournaments are scheduled to be played Tuesday evening at Todd Central. Since the season has been dramatically shortened because of coronavirus, the teams have only played each other once this year.
In the boys tournament, favorite Franklin-Simpson meets defending champion Logan County at 5:30 p.m. Returning finalist Russellville takes on host Todd at 8.
For the third straight season, the girls tournament will begin with a Clash of the Lady Cats. Logan County plays Russellville at 5:30. The second games matches F-S and Todd Central at 8.
The championship matches will be played Thursday with the girls match to begin at 5:30 and boys at 8.
Boys Tournament
Russellville (6-8 overall, 2-1 district) is the number two seed. The loss is to top-seeded Franklin-Simpson (6-5-2, 3-0).
Coach Jeramy Rust’s Panthers won their final regular season match 2-1 over Christian County. Dustin Brown and Avery Flener each scored a goal. Brown assisted Flener’s goal and Milo Brooks got the assist on Brown’s.
The Panther defense was so strong that the Colonels only managed four shots on goal. Nick Bollenbecker turned three of those shots away.
Logan County (1-10-1, 0-3) has had a tough time this year after winning the championship match 5-0 over Russellville last year. Coach Hunt McCullom’s team wasn’t scored on in the tournament last year, including a 4-0 win over Todd Central.
The Cougars are in the midst of a tough rebuilding year. Their win came 3-2 over Allen County-Scottsville Sept. 26. Jeffrey Taylor, Seth Burchett and Nathaniel Petrie scored the goals. Burchett added an assist. Goalie Evan Dana had nine saves in the match.
Two days later, the Cougars tied Christian County. Burchett and Taylor scored again. Taylor added an assist. Dana recorded five saves.
Since then the Cougars have been outscored 35-3 in five matches to close the season.
Todd Central is 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the district.
Girls Tournament
Top-seeded Logan is officially 5-2-6, with five of the ties counted as 0-0 by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in matches not played because of the virus. The losses are to South Warren and Warren Central in the traditional soccer power 14th District.
The Lady Cougars outscored their three district opponents 15-4. Kadyn Costello scored four goals for Coach Barry McReynolds’ team in a 6-0 win over RHS. Elizabeth Phelps and Autumn Taylor each scored with Addie Corder getting an assist. Brady Alsup recorded nine saves.
Emily Stapleton, Jasmine Kennedy, Malley Jayne and Anastasia Dowlen have done the scoring for Coach Eric Evans’ Lady Panthers (2-6, 0-3). Aliyah Kennedy has averaged 13.5 saves and 4.8 goals per match.
Franklin is 5-4-1 and 2-2-1 in the district, and Todd Central is 5-7-1 and 1-2-1 in the district.
