The veterans led the way for the Logan County Lady Cougars in their season opener Tuesday, but they didn’t get as much help as they needed in a 66-44 loss at Edmonson County.
Senior Abby Hinton, who was the top substitute last year and an often-used reserve as a freshman and a sophomore, scored 17 points. She hit 3 of 6 three-point attempts and 6 of 8 free throws. She was the team co-leader with 7 rebounds, the same as freshman Emerson McKinnis. The rest of the team added 14 rebounds.
Junior Kadyn Costello, who was the second reserve used often in last year’s district championship season, added 12 points. She hit 3 or 4 free throws.
Freshman point guard Emily Borders had 8 points. She was also 3 of 4 at the line.
Also scoring were Sierra Seiber and McKinnis with 3 each, and Gracie Borders with 1. Brianna Shelton had 4 rebounds.
Also played were TaKyla Mason, Kaelyn Perdue, Avery Beason and Kierra Costello.
The top three scorers were 12 of 16 at the line. The rest of the team went 3 of 11.
This was the first game as Lady Cougar head coach for Dedra Adler. She had a standout playing career at LCHS, played college ball, and then made Russellville girls basketball competitive as head coach there.
She says, “We may not always be the most experienced but we WILL play hard! Our core values are respect, accountability, passion, team work, and work ethic and these girls embrace these daily!”
The Lady Cougars’ home opener is scheduled for Tuesday in a girl-boy doubleheader against visiting Allen County-Scottsville. It will be caried live on WRUS.
