When the Logan County Cougars got their first win of the season, they did it with flair, pizzaz and a sonic boom. Coach Nathan Thompson’s team built a running clock at 52-17 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter on the way to a 61-27 district victory over visiting Todd Central Friday.
Ironically that 52-point plateau matched the most points the Cougars had scored in any game prior to this win.
The win was not only Thompson’s first win as a high school head basketball coach, but it came at the expense of his old boss, Dennis Pardue. Thompson was one of Pardue’s assistants on some successful Russellville Panther teams.
With Anthony ‘Rooster’ Woodard leading the way, the Cougars led 21-6 after a quarter. And when fellow senior guard Blake Wood hitting his fifth 3-pointer, LCHS led 40-11 at halftime.
Chance Sweeney’s goal put the home team ahead 57-21 after three quarters. The biggest margin was 39 at 60-21 on Wood’s seventh trey.
Wood went 7 of 12 from long range while Woodard was 4 of 7. Woodard was 5 of 6 from two-point range and Landon Larson 3 of 3. The Cougars went a sizzling 11 of 15 on two-pointers and 22 of 40 overall. Woodard scored 22 and Wood 21.
Larson finished with 8 rebounds and Woodard 7.
