Tonight’s 13th District girls game between Russellville and Logan County could very well be one of the lowest scoring in tournament history. Both teams are very young, both play good defense, and, sadly, both have trouble putting the ball in the basket.
The Lady Panthers won the two regular season games between the crosstown rivals 47-36 and 32-31. Coach Ryan Davenport’s team averaged 45.7 points per game on the way to a 9-9 record overall, 5-7 in the region and 3-3 in the district. They allowed 47.3 points per game. In half of their games, opponents scored 50 or fewer points. In four of those, the other team scored below 40, three of those coming in their last four games. RHS won four of its last five games after getting injured and quarantined players back in uniform.
The Lady Cougars averaged just 36.2 points an outing while giving up 45.1 points allowed. In 14 of their games, the opposition scored below 50, and in half of them the number was below 40. In their five four games, the other team scored an average of 31.5. Coach Dedra Adler’s team is on a two-game winning streak, and one of those four was the 32-31 loss to the Lady Panthers.
Shooting accuracy is the problem forth both teams. The Lady Panthers are hitting 34.7 percent overall, 18.8 percent (32 of 170) from the three-point range and 49 percent (128 of 261) from the free throw line. The Lady Cougars are hitting 29.8 percent overall, 24.6 percent (91 of 370) on three-pointers and 52.4 percent (220 of 420) from the line.

Notes:
*Although the two head coaches are in their first year in leading these teams, they are both well-known in the community. Logan County’s Dedra Adler and Russellville’s Ryan Davenport both were players for the programs they are now leading, both graduating in 1999.
Adler was head coach of the Lady Panthers for several years. She was an assistant coach at LCHS last year. Her husband, Todd Adler, who was one of her assistants at RHS, is head football coach at LCHS.
Davenport continues as head softball coach. His first coaching position was freshman basketball at Logan County. He was an assistant basketball coach at RHS under his former coach, Phil Todd. This year he has added three new titles—RHS Athletic Director, RMS Assistant Principal and Lady Panther head basketball coach. His wife, Tonya Davenport, performs a key staff role at RMS.
*Abby Hinton is Logan County’s only senior. Russellville has two, Chloe Whitescarver and Macaria Hines of Russellville. The younger Lady Panthers brought much more varsity experience into the season, though, than did the Lady Cougars.
