Despite some good individual statistics, Logan County Baseball is off to an uncharacteristically slow start. After five games, the Cougars are 1-4 on the season. One of the losses was by a single run and another turned into an 11-4 score after being close most of the game. But two of the losses were halted after five innings when the Cougars fell behind by 10 in both games.

On the other hand, six of the seven seniors have some impressive stats:

Pitcher Sam Brown has hurled the lone win and has pitched six innings without giving up an earned run. He has walked only one batter while striking out five. He has also hit the team’s only home run, which drove in three runs in the 7-3 win over Butler County he pitched.

Reliever Jaxon Hendrix joins Brown with a 0.00 earned run average. He’s only allowed one hit and no runs in three innings while walking two and striking out three.

The newcomer to the team, Kruise Newman, has good numbers both on the mound and at the plate. He has a 3.50 earned run average in two appearances, but lost the opener when relief pitching broke down. So did the defense. Only three of the eight runs he allowed have been earned.

Newton, a transfer student who has signed to play baseball for the University of Tennessee, is batting .455 with five hits and give walks.

Zach Yates is second on the team in batting average at.429. He leads in hits with six, in doubles with four and in RBIs with seven.

Macon Barrow is hitting .313 with five hits, two walks and two RBIs. A sixth senior, Blake Wood, has four hits, including two doubles, and four RBIs.

Others have made contributions:

In the win over Butler County, Chance Sweeney got a hit, was hit by a pitch, and scored two runs. Connor Binkley doubled in an 11-4 loss to South Warren. Harper Butler and Jack Delaney each scored a run in that game.

Isaac Stanley allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out two while getting five outs in that South Warren game. Freshman Montgomery Milam got the only batter out that he faced in a loss to Warren East on three pitches. Wyatt Blake recorded an RBI in a 5-4 loss to Muhlenberg County. Senior Aaron Hinton scored a run in that game.

The Cougars are batting .209 as a team

Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team returns to action Saturday against Marion County at Allen County-Scottsville.
