Lady Cougars win 4 of first 5 games

The Logan County Lady Cougars are off to an excellent start in this softball season, winning four of their first five games. They take a 4-2 record into this weekend’s Grayson County Spring Break Bash.

Here’s a look at the start of Coach Mark Wood’s team’s season:

Lady Cougars 4, Greenwood 0

Shelby Gettings pitched a 1-hit jewel and got 2 hits and an RBI in an opening day win March 29. Senior Abby Hinton hit a 2-run homer. Kaylin Page doubled, singled, scored and stole a base. Kinley Holloway got the sixth LCHS hit. AIi Garrett stole a base and Grayce Mefford added an RBI.

Gettings needed only 75 pitches during seven innings to get the 21 outs. She walked two and struck out three Lady Gators.

Lady Cougars 15, Edmonson County 3

Freshman Emerson McKinnis had a tremendous game, homering, doubling twice, singling, getting hit by a pitch and scoring a run.

Hailey Collins and Page were just one hit behind her with 3 each. Collins had 8 total bases, also one behind McKinnis. She did that by tripling twice and doubling, and she scored 3 runs. Page tripled, singled twice, also scored 3 runs, and piled up 4 RBIs.

Shayla Johnson doubled and singled and scored a pair of runs. Holloway had 2 hits and scored both times. Hinton doubled and singled, and Holloway had 2 hits and 2 runs. Gettings singled in a run.

Mefford had 2 RBIs. Garrett scored 2 runs while Maddix Mowles and Hailey Burgess each added a run.

Hinton pitched the first 4 innings and allowed 2 runs. Gettings pitched the final 3 innings and was awarded the win. She gave up one unearned run. Each pitcher struck out 2 and walked none.

This has been Edmonson County’s only loss in the early season.

South Warren 15, Lady Cougars 1

Logan managed only 3 hits. Gettings singled and doubled. Johnson homered for the only run. McKinnis, Holloway and Maddix each walked.

Lady Cougars 11, Madisonville-North Hopkins 8

Collins homered, singled, racked up 4 RBIs, and scored. McKinnis homered, singled, walked, drove in 3 runs, and scored. Mowles doubled twice, singled, scored twice and added an RBI.

Garrett went 3 for 3, scored 2 runs and got an RBI. Page doubled, singled, and scored a run. Johnson singled and scored.

Gettings pitched the win, giving up 6 earned runs. She struck out 6 and walked 3. She also singled twice and added an RBI. Natalie Cates, Hinton and Burgess also scored.

Lady Cougars 8, M-NH 1

The second game of the doubleheader was easier to win. Page had 3 hits, Collins and Gettings 2 each, and Garrett, Hinton, McKinnis, Holloway and Mowles 1 each.

Hinton powered the big hit, a grand slam homer. Page had 3 hits, 2 RBIs and a run. Collins and Gettings each doubled among their 2 hits and each drove in a run. Collins scored twice and Gettings once. Garrett and Holloway each singled and scored. McKinnis and Mowles added a hit each. Burgess scored a run.

Johnson pitched the complete game win, giving up a run on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 2. She needed an average of 12 pitches an inning.

Bethlehem 2, Lady Cougars 0

Johnson pitched well and Logan got 8 hits, but the Lady Cougars couldn’t score.

Page not only banged out 4 hits, including the team’s only extra-base hit, a double. McKinnis added 3 hits, and Johnson and Mowles each singled.

Johnson gave up the 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk while striking out 9. Only 1 of the runs was earned.
