Lady Cougar softball dominant in 5 straight wins

After losing five games in a row, the Logan County Lady Cougars have bounced back in a big way lately, not only winning five straight—including two in their district—but outscoring those five opponents by a combined scored of 58-6. The first four were shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

Coach Mark Wood’s team got solid work on the mound from three pitchers—Shelby Gettings, Shayla Johnson and Hailey Burchett—without even using his most experienced pitcher, senior Abby Hinton.

The streak reached its peak with an impressive win over a good Russellville team in the Clash of the Lady Cats Tuesday. On Thursday, the Lady Cougars lost 10-9 in an extra inning to a Jo Bryns team which handed RHS one of its other two losses earlier in the season.

Here’s a look at the five wins in reverse order:

Lady Cougars 7, Lady Panthers 2

Shelby Gettings gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts in 7 innings. She also singled and added an RBI.

Emerson McKinnis homered, singled, scored and drove in 3 runs. Maddix Mowles doubled and had an RBI. KJ Page doubled, singled, walked, scored and had an RBI. Kinley Holloway singled, walked and scored. Abby Hinton singled and scored. Shayla Johnson singled while Natalie Cates and Hailey Collins scored.

Russellville has not posted individual statistics for the last six games.

Lady Cougars 16, Hopkins County Central 0

Hailey Burgess pitched the one-hit shutout over 4 innings. She also homered, drove in 2 runs and scored in the Kelly Russell Classic.

Grayce Mefford was awesome at the plate, going 4 for 4 with 3 homers, 9 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

Hinton went 2 for 2 with a double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Holloway had 2 hits and scored. Sierra Seiber and Gettings each got a hit and scored twice. Cates and Page each tallied a hit and a run. Ali Garrett and Mowles each had a hit.

Sydni Blick, Trinity Case and Johnson each added a run. Johnson and Burgess both walked.

Lady Cougars 12, Trigg County 1

McKinnis and Collins both homered. McKinnis also doubled, drove in 3 runs, and scored. Collins got 2 RBIs and scored twice.

Mowles doubled, singled, drove in 3 runs and scored. Gettings singled twice and scored both times. Johnson doubled and had 2 RBIs. Page doubled and scored. Holloway had 1 each of hits, RBIs and runs scored.

Hinton worked the only 2 walks Logan managed and scored both times. Seiber and Cates both scored.

Johnson pitched a jewel, giving up 1 unearned run on 3 hits and a walk with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings.

Lady Cougars 11, Glasgow 1

Mefford and Johnson each homered and drove in three runs. Mefford scored twice. Page got the third extra-base hit, a double. She had two each of hits, RBIs and runs scored.

Holloway singled twice and scored, Collins singled and scored twice. Mowles singled, walked and scored. Hinton singled, scored and added an RBI. Collins singled and scored twice. Gettings singled and walked. McKinnis had an RBI, and Cates scored.

Gettings pitched beautifully again, giving up an unearned run and 2 hits without walking a Lady Scottie and striking out 12. She needed only 58 pitches to get 15 outs in 5 innings, fewer than 4 pitches an out.

Lady Cougars 12, Todd Central 2

Johnson began the series of pitching gems by allowing the Lady Rebels just 1 earned run on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4.

Gettings and Collins each got 3 hits, with one of Gettings’ a double. Gettings drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Collins totaled 3 runs and an RBI while stealing a base. Page added 2 hits and a stolen base. Garrett and Hinton each singled with Hinton driving in 2 runs and Garrett walked, scored 2 runs and added an RBI.

McKinnis doubled and walked. Mefford singled in a run and scored. Holloway got a hit and scored. Mowles, Seiber and Cates each scored.

For Todd Central had 3 hits and Jocelyn Mock 2. Mock doubled and they combined for the 2 RBIs. The other hits came from Shaeleina Wade and Abby Williams. Maddie Williams and Madelyn Slaughter each waked.

Abigail McPherson took the loss on the Lady Rebel mound.
