Lady Cougars earn first place in 13th District Softball

Completing a first-round sweep of their 13th District opponents, the Logan County Lady Cougars beat previous co-leader Franklin Simpson 7-5 Tuesday to improve to 3-0 in district standings.

Coach Mark Wood’s team banged out 11 hits, including two for extra bases. Shayla Johnson homered, singled, drove in 2 runs and scored twice. Abby Hinton doubled for an RBI and scored.

Shelby Gettings was the starting and winning pitcher. She also got a hit and the only walk the winners worked. Hailey Burgess pitched the seventh inning, giving up 2 hits and a run for the save.

Freshman catcher Emerson McKinnis banged out 3 hits and an RBI. Grayce Mefford singled in a run. Maddix Mowles and Kinley Holloway each added a hit and added a run.

Sierra Seiber and Natalie Cates each scored a run.

The Lady Cougars ran their record to 10-8 overall and 5-3 in the region.

Lady Panthers 7, Todd Central 1

The Russsellville Lady Panthers picked up a key win at the same time, beating the Todd Central Lady Rebels 7-1 at Elkton.

They had been tied with 0-2 district records. Now the district standings find Logan County 3-0, Franklin-Simpson 2-1, Russellville 1-2 and Todd Central 0-3.

The second half of district play is scheduled to begin next Tuesday.

Individual statistics are not available in this game, since the hitting and pitching numbers haven’t been reported for the Lady Panthers in the last 11 games.
