The 13th District softball and baseball tournaments are scheduled to begin today on Russellville High’s School’s fields.
In softball, top-seeded Logan County plays number four Todd Central at 5 p.m. Coach Mark Wood’s Lady Cougars are 16-14 overall, 9-6 in the region and 6-0 in the district. They are ranked sixth in the region by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s RPI (.55353). They have beaten Todd 12-2 both times they played during the regular season.
The Lady Rebels are 14-13-1 overall, 2-7 in the region and 0-7 in the district. The extra loss was to Russellville in the All A regional. Their RPI is .47341.
Second-seeded Franklin-Sipson takes on host Russellville at 7:30 tonight. Coach Ryan Davenport’s RHS team got off to a great start, winning the All A Region and three games at state along with the Murray invitational. They, however, have lost five straight games and eight of their last 10 to fall to 20-15 overall, 7-11 in the region and 3-4 in the district. They have an RPI of .54658. Their 20 wins are tied for the fifth most in the region. Their 284 runs scored are the most in the region by a 28-run margin.
Franklin has a lower RPI (.52539) that RHS, although they have beaten the Lady Panthers 6-5 and 16-8. The Lady Kats are 17-19 overall, 8-10 in the region and 4-2 un the district.
The district championship is scheduled Tuesday, June 1, at 6 p.m.
Baseball
The host Panthers go against top-seeded Franklin-Simpson at 5 p.m. at Kelly Russell Field. Coach Robby McLellan’s team is 2-21 overall, 0-8 in the region and 0-6 in the district with an RPI of .27508.
Franklin-Simpson is 18-13 overall, 12-8 in the region and 6-0 in the district. Coach Matthew Wilhite’s Wildcats have beaten RHS 11-1 and 16-0. Their RPI is sixth in the region at .55797.
Second-seeded Logan County will play Todd Central at 7:30 tonight. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team is 18-13 overall, 11-9 in the region and 4-2 in the district. The Cougars are 10-5 in May and won nine straight games between April 30 and May 15, outscoring their opponents 104-28 in the process. Their RPI is .54322.
The Cougars have beaten Todd Central 9-1 and 8-0 this year. Coach Greg Shelton’s Rebels have known success, however. Their record is 22-9, which is tied for the fourth most wins and third fewest losses. They have played most of their games outside the region, going 3-5 in the region and 2-4 in the district. Their RPI is .50193.
The baseball championship game is scheduled Monday, Memorial Day, at 6 p.m.
