With the defense pitching two shutouts and allowing its two opponents a combined six yards of total offense, the Logan County Middle School Cougars have started the season at 2-0. They beat Todd County 34-0 in their opener on Aug. 24 and Allen County-Scottsville 16-0 two days later.
Quarterback Isaac Christian put up great numbers against the visiting Rebels. He threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. He completed all eight of his passes for 125 yards and the three scores and ran five times for 31 yards.
The Cougars scored the only points they would need with 4:40 remaining in the first quarter on an 8-yard run by Jeremiah Washington, Damani Goodloe ran the first his two conversions to make it 8-0. Less than three minutes later, Christian ran a 1-yard keeper for the TD. Jeremiah Washington ran the conversion successfully, and Logan led 16-0 after a quarter.
Christian then threw three touchdown passes with two of them coming in the second quarter, The scoring reception came on an 11-yarder to Thomas Broderick, an 8-yarders to Ridge Holman and a 15-yarder to Cooper Parker.
Conversion kick attempts by Jackson Kemplin and Christian Helle were unsuccessful.
Davis Switzer came on to play quarterback. He completed his only pass for 14 yards and ran twice for 7.
Goodloe was the leading rusher with 51 yards on five attempts. Washington ran four times for 14 yards and Helle twice for eight yards. Broderick caught a scoring pass.
Goodloe, Holman and Parker each caught two of Christian’s passes. Goodloe picked up 45 yards on them, Holman 34 and Parker 25. Washington had a 19-yard catch and Christian Hines a 14-yarder.
The Cougar defense was dominant. They held the Rebels to a negative22 yards, running only 20 plays. Todd completed four passes for a negative 13 yards and ran the ball eight times for a negative nine.
The Rebels ran so few plays that there were only 12 main tackles. Washington and Goodloe each were credited with two tackles while Parker, Holman, Switzer, Robert Cooper, Ryan Shultz, Dayton Hurt, Carson Trimble and Asher Morris had one each. Washington, Parker, Helle and Ayden Trimble and were awarded an assisted tackle each.
Cooper, Hurt and Morris each had a sack while Goodloe had two tackles for losses with Holman and Schultz each getting one and Parker and Ayden Trimble sharing another.
Holman returned the Rebels’ only kickoff 15 yards.
LCMS 16, AC-SMS 0
As was the case in the opener, Washington scored the winning touchdown. This one came on a 4-yard run in the second quarter. Christian hit Goodloe with a conversion pass.
The defense scored the other touchdown. When AC-S fumbled a snap in the shadow of its goal posts, Lucas Cross recovered it six yards behind the line of scrimmage in the end zone in the third quarter. Washington’s conversion run made it 16-0.
Logan picked up 154 yards total offense on 37 plays while the Patriots gained 28 yards on 24 plays.
The Cougars rushed for 151 yards with Goodloe picking up 76 of them on 11 carries, Washington 51 on 8, Christian 22 on 6 and Kemplin 3 on 2. Aydan Trimble made the only catch for 3 yards.
Washington led the say on defense with 4 main tackles and 2 assists; three of them were tackles for losses. Kemplin also had six tackles with five of them assists. Parker was right behind them with five tackles, two of them main. Bryar Gaddis had four assists, while Goodloe had two main tackles and an assist. Cross and Joe Isaac Smotherman were each credited with a solo and an assist while Holman had two assists and Morris one. Cross and Smotherman each made a tackle for a loss.
Washington returned AC-S’ only kickoff 21 yards.
