A player from each of the football teams in the Land of Logan is among the leading vote-getters for a significant state honor.

They are junior Peyton Taylor from Logan County and senior Braxton Baptiste from Russellville.

Each week, the Lexington Herald-Leader highlights some of the best high school football individual performances in Kentucky for the Kentucky.com Defensive Player of the Week. They were selected by digital sports writer Jared Peck (@HLpreps) via stats uploaded to KHSAA.org by 10 a.m. each Monday or game boxes submitted to hlsports@herald-leader.com on the night of the game.

Each week’s top five will be announced on Twitter at @HLpreps and the winner will be listed in our “Friday Night Lights” preview story online and each subsequent week’s poll. Here are this week’s nominees presented in alphabetical order. Vote for your favorite. Voting ends at noon Friday Eastern Daylight Time.

Taylor was fourth out of 50 candidates in the voting early Thursday afternoon with 428 votes. Baptiste was seventh with 149 votes. Fifteen of the nominees didn’t have a single vote and another 12 only had one.

In Logan County’s 47-0 blitz of Calloway County Friday, Taylor was credited with 6 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks. In Russellville’s 27-0 shutout of Crittenden County, Baptiste had 6 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, 3 sacks.

Usually the top vote getters are from Central or Eastern Kentucky where the newspaper is located.
