Lady Cougars and Lady Panthers win season softball openers

of their returning experience and talent. They got off to good starts by winning their season openers this week.

Coach Ryan Davenport’s Russellville Lady Panthers were impressive in winning on the road Tuesday, beating Warren East 5-1. No individual stats have been posted by the team yet.

On Monday, the Logan County Lady Cougars beat visiting Ohio County 6-4.

Senior Nora Epley recorded big hits and big numbers. She homered and tripled, drove in two runs and scored two. The team’s only extra-base hits were hers.

Senior Hayley Burgess went three for four, scoring a run and driving in an RBI.

Senior Emerson McKinnis singled and walked the other three times she came to the plate.

Also getting hits were Caris Taylor, Keirsten Harper and Trinity Case, Harper. Taylor and Addison Holloway each scored a run.

Senior Shayla Johnson was the starting and winning pitcher. She had two outs in the sixth inning before she gave way to junior reliever Addison Cartas, who got the save. Johnson gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight. Cartas didn’t allow a hit, walk or run while recording the last four outs.

Coach Gary Gettings’ Lady Cougars play at Glasgow Friday at 5:30 p.m. They will entertain Allen County-Scottsville Saturday at 3:30 to start the Kentucky 2A-Section 2 Tournament.

The Lady Panthers will host Christian County at 6 p.m. Thursday.
