Logan County’s baseball team is off to an uncharacteristically slow start for the season with a 1-4 record, but that win is the most important one. The Cougars beat Edmonson County 10-6 Saturday in their first round game of the Class 2A Sectional.

Davin Yates and Samuel Hayes swung big bats, and Chance Sweeney pitched the win with help from Dayman McLean.

Yates went 4 for 4 at the plate with a homer, 2 doubles, 5 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Hayes doubled among his 2 hits, stole a couple of bases, and scored 2 runs.

Sweeny pitched 6 innings. He gave up 7 hits but no walks, and he struck out 11 Wildcats. Only 3 of the 5 runs he allowed were earned. McLean pitched the seventh with 2 of the 3 outs coming via strikeouts. He allowed one each of a hit, a run and a walk.

Joining Yates and Hayes with an extra-base hit were Brady Hinton and McLean with doubles. Also getting a hit were Tripp Wadlington, James Singleton and Kade Wall.

Courtesy runner Noah Mosley stole a pair of bases and scored 2 runs. Also scoring were Karson Rodgers, Wall, McLean and Singleton. Wall was the third Cougar to steal 2 bases. Harper Butler also swiped one with the Cougars going 7 for 7 on stolen base attempts.

Sweeney walked twice and Singleton once.

University Heights 7, Cougars 6

The Cougars got behind early and could never quite catch up in a close loss on Friday.

Hinton had more success on offense than defense. He went 3 for 4 batting with a double and 2 RBIs. As the starting pitcher, though, he gave up 4 earned runs on just 1 hit, primarily because he issued 6 walks. He did strike out 6 Blazers in 2.2 innings.

Yates pitched the next two innings. He didn’t allow a run or a hit but did walk 2 batters. He struck out 5. Jacob Regan gave up a run on 2 hit sand 2 walks in 1.1 innings. Braden Engler worked the seventh and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits; he didn’t walk anyone.

Hinton’s double was the only extra-base hit for the Cougars. Wall got a hit and walked the other three times he came to the plate. He scored a run. McLean singled in 2 runs. Hayes got Logan’s only other hit. Yates walked twice and scored 2 runs. Jason Mautz walked and scored. Also scoring were Butler and Sweeney. Hayes and Mautz each got a steal.

The Cougars have two more home games scheduled this week. They are to entertain Allen County-Scottsville today at 5:30 and Glasgow Friday at 5:30.
