Cougars record pair of blowout wins in Florida

Fourteen was a magic number for the Logan County Cougars in Florida last week. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s team went 2-2, but they scored 14 runs in each of their wins in the Fort Walton Beach Bash.

On Wednesday, they skunked the host team 14-0 behind the pitching of Chance Sweeney, who came within an out of a complete game shutout. In 6,2 innings, he only allowed two hits and four walks while striking out six. Jacob Regan came on to get the 21st out on four pitches.

Brady Hinton tripled and walked to bring in four runs. Harper Butler, Samuel Hayes and Tripp Wadlington each singled twice to drive in runs. Dayman McLean only had one hit, but he used it and two doubles for three RBIs. Kade Wall singled for an RBI, and Chance Sweeney and Davin Yates also got a hit. Butler was successful on the Cougars’ only stolen base attempt.

McLean scored three runs with Hayes, Wall and Yates adding two each. Noah Mosley, Colin Wetton and Butler also scored.

Cougars 14, Graves County 2

Hinton and Butler each tripled in this Friday game with Hinton getting two more hits and a walk while piling up five RBIs, stealing a base, and scoring three runs. Butler added a single to his triple, scored twice and drove in a run.

Mosley doubled, singled, drove in two runs and scored. Yates also doubled and singled, scored and added an RBI. McLean was the fifth Cougar with two or more hits. Sweeney scored three runs by singling, walking and stealing a base. Hayes singled, walked, scored two runs and drove one in. Wall had one each of hits, runs and RBIs. 

Braden Engler pitched six innings for the win. He gave up two unearned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two. Jason Mautz pitched the seventh inning, allowing no runs on a hit while striking out one batter.

The Season

The Cougars returned from Florida with a 7-9 record.

Four players—Yates. Hayes. Hinton and Mosley—are batting over .300. Hinton leads the team in RBIs (15) and triples (3) while being tied with Yates for home runs with one each and with Hayes and Mosley in runs scored (13). Yates leads in batting average (.340). doubles (6), and extra base hits (8). He and Hayes are tied for most hits (18), and Hayes has scored the most runs (54).

Wadlington is tops in being hit by a pitch (11) while Wall is tops in walks (14) and stolen bases (5).

Sweeney has a sparkling 1.12 earned run average. He also leads the team with four starts on the mound, 25 innings pitched, 26 strikeouts, saves (1) and pitches thrown (393). He and Regan are tied for wins with two. McLean and Singleton are tied for most games pitched in with six.

McLean, Engler and Hinton have one win each.

Singleton, Mautz, Yates. Wetton, Drew McLellan and Karson Rodgers have also pitched.
