WKU unveiled the design for its brand-new, state-of-the-art FieldTurf Vertex CORE surface for Feix Field at Houchens-Smith Stadium on Tuesday.

The newest addition to the field design is Big Red, WKU's lovable mascot, on each 25-yard line opposite the Conference USA logo.

"We are excited about the installation of the new, state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface inside Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium this month," WKU Athletic Director Todd Stewart said. "The existing surface has been utilized since the onset of the 2014 season, so it was time to replace it after playing 10 football seasons, in addition to all of the other practices, training sessions, and events it has been utilized for. The new surface honors the timeless tradition of the WKU Red Towel on Feix Field while also incorporating our nationally-recognized mascot, Big Red, on opposite 25-yard-lines. This will be a fantastic surface for our WKU student-athletes to train and play on for many years to come."

The end zones remain black, with white "Hilltoppers" block text outlined in red instead of the "WKU" red block text outlined in white on the most recent surface, which was installed before the 2014 season. The WKU red towel primary logo remains at midfield, while the "Feix Field" text moves to each sideline on the new turf.

The new surface is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.

In addition to WKU Football, the field is used by the Big Red Marching Band, by WKU Soccer, by WKU Track & Field, for WKU Master Plan for all freshman students, and for WKU Spring Commencement, among other activities.
