The Logan County Lady Cougars put together a big fourth inning on the way to a 9-5 win over Russellville and the 13th District Tournament championship Tuesday night at Elkton.
After Lady Panther Madison Penrod drove in the tying run at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning, LCHS scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. The big hit was a two-run triple by Hailey Burgess.
RHS’ Chloe Penrod homered in the fifth, but the Lady Panthers couldn’t get enough offense going to overcome the deficit.
Coach Gary Gettings’ champs scored three runs in the first inning on a two-RBI double by Sydni Blick, who came home on Kinley Holloway’s sacrifice fly. Emerson McKinnis joined Burgess in tripling in the game.
Both Maddie Burgess and Hailey Burgess had two hits. Kerstein Harper. Shayla Johnson, Nora Epley and Holloway all singled. In addition to the two RBIs each for Blick and Hailey Burgess, Harper, Hollway and McKinnis each drove in a run.
Among those scoring were Addison Holloway, Trinity Case and Caris Taylor.
Johnson pitched the win. She gave up the five runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out four.
Both Penrods, Ja’eda Poindexter and Turtle Bell each had two hits for Coach Ryan Davenports Lady Panthers.
Eighth grader Rylee Grayson took the loss on the mound.
Russellville had eliminated Franklin-Simpson 7-5 late Monday to reach the finals after the Lady Cats had beaten them twice in the regular season.
Named to the All-District Team were Johnson, Epley and McKinnis of Logan County and Reese Croslin, Crissy Higgins, Madison Penrod and Poindexter of Russellville.
The Lady Cougars improved their record to 28-4. Russellville is now 23-14.
It was the fourth straight year these two teams have met in a bonus Clash of the Cats championship game. Logan has won three of them with the Lady Panthers taking the 2022 title.
