Panther boys soccer edges Cougars by a goal twice

When Russellville boys soccer edged Logan County 3-2 last week, it was the second time this year that Coach Jeramy Rust’s team has beaten the Cougars by a single goal The first came August 27 by a 1-0 score.

Riley Hatfield scored that lone goal in August on an assist from Samuel Cruz. Goalkeeper Mason Davenport recorded five assists with Noah Harris adding one in the shutout.

In the more recent Clash of the Soccer Cats, Eli Flippin scored two goals and JaCoveon Temple-Dickerson one with Alex Arnold and Cruz each getting an assist. Harris had three saves while allowing the two goals. Temple-Dickerson and Arnold are also key members of the Panther football teams.

On the season, Flippin has scored 13 goals this season with Temple-Dickerson adding eight, Charles Graves seven, Hatfield six, and Diego Vera, Ethan O’Neal and Cruz getting four each. Immanuel Clayton has scored twice. Also adding goals have been Aiden Jayne, Arnold, Braxton Coleman and Davenport.

Cruz leads the way with nine assists. Hatfield and O’Neal have six assists each, Flippin five, Vera three, and Temple-Dickerson, Graves, Clayton and Coleman two each. Also recording an assist have been Jayne and Farmer.

In the Sept.17 match, Asher Woodall and Andrew McCall each scored a goal for the Cougars. Lorenzo Cellai had an assist. Goalkeeper James Bryan had eight saves but allowed those three goals.

In the August match Bryan had seven saves and only gave up that one goal.

McCall and Cellai are the scoring leaders for Coach Trevar Gray’s team with eight goals each. Impressively, Cellai has done that in just eight matches. Kevin Hernandez and Kaden Sells have scored four each, Caleb Cardenas three and Woodall two. Also scoring a goal have been Oliver Holloway, Ethan Scarbrough, Lane Harris, Caleb Fulkerson and Christian Scarbrough.

McCall and Hernandez each been credited with two assists while Harris, Martin Veigel, Cellai and Woodall each have one.

Bryan has recorded 139 saves while Layton Davenport has four saves in three matches.

The Panthers have a 10-9 record overall and are 2-4 in the district. They will play Todd Central (12-3, 4-2) in the district tournament. The Cougars (4-10, (0-6) will play top seed Franklin-Simpson (9-4, 6-0) in the postseason.
