The Russellville Middle School Softball team won the 13th District Tournament recently in Todd County,
As the number 1 seed, the Lady Panthers played 4th seed Todd County, winning that game 11-10.
Coach Chris Penrod’s team then moved to the championship against Logan County and won 9-5.
“We have had multiple rainouts, including the State Tournament, so we finished our season 13-2,” Penrod says.
The starting lineup for the champs: shortstop Legna Taylor, second baseman Mariyah Merriweather, third baseman Lexie Triplett, pitcher Baily Harper, first baseman Aniyah Hampton, centerfielder KK ‘Peanut’ Hampton, catcher Addison Duncan, leftfielder Grace Tinsley and rightfielder DeNazia Kennedy.
Also playing for the champs were Josie Penrod, Jossy Poindexter, Hailey Sitz, Christine Taylor and Emilee Whittaker.
Assisting Penrod with the coaching were Seth Whittaker and Jammie Carter.
Russellville had also beaten Logan County 5-0 late in the season. The Lady Cougars beat Franklin-Simpson to reach the finals. On their Eighth Grade Night, Kaliha Witherspoon hit her second homer of the season as the Lady Cougars beat the Lady Cats 4-0. It was Logan’s second win over F-S, the other coming 2-0. That same week Logan Middle outscored Todd 12-4.
