The first time the Russellville Lady Panthers played Logan County this season, the Lady Panthers were outscored 19-0 the final seven minutes of
the game to see a mere three-point deficit balloon into a 52-30 Lady Cougar victory. Tuesday in the 13th District Tournament, RHS dominated
the fourth quarter to win 47-39 and guarantee themselves at least two more games while ending Logan’s season.
The Lady Cougars led 32-29 on a free throw by Laura Hunt and two by Shannon MacAllister with 5:32 remaining in the game. Then RHS’ Amber Sydnor
sank a 3-pointer to tie it. After teammate Imani Hampton knocked the ball loose from Logan, Sydnor went in for a layup that gave Russellville the lead
for keeps with 3:50 showing on the clock. Two free throws each by Davonna Sydnor and Nathanshia Haskins made the lead six before Lady Cougar senior
standout Jaylin Jones hit a spinning goal, ending a scoring drought of almost four minutes.
The Lady Cougars’ chances were hurt when freshman post player Kapreshia Powell picked up her fourth and fifth fouls within a few seconds of each
other with two and a half minutes remaining. Powell was Logan’s leading scorer in the game. Another freshman, Meagann Hardison, hit a 3-pointer to pull
Logan to within three points with 51 seconds left, but Russellville’s Khalia Hampton hit three foul shots, Amber Sydnor two, and Amber Rosser and Imani
Hampton one each to seal the victory.
Coach Dedra Adler’s winners got 16 of 23 fourth quarter free throws to fall in the clutch win. The Lady Panthers went 19 of 27 for the game while
Logan was 11 of 17.
Coach Scot MacAllister used 11 players in the game while the outcome was still in doubt. Some of them responded admirably, highlighted by a long
goal by senior Kate Brooks on an assist from Hardison. The Lady Cougars came back from their first deficit on a goal by Megan Lindsey, who then drew a
charge on the other end.
Logan led at the first three stops, 11-7 and 18-15 at the first two. Powell’s two free throws made it 27-24 after three quarters. Russellville’s
Jazzy Elliott hit a three-pointer to tie it, and Powell hooked in a goal to put the Lady Cougars up 29-27. Davonna Sydnor’s goal nullified that lead,
though. The remainder of the game featured the home team.
The Lady Cougars, who won the second Clash of the Cats by the same score by which they lost this one, finished with an 11-15 record. It was the
final game for seniors Meg Brown, Kara Lyons, Polly Cowan, Jones, Brooks and MacAllister.
Russellville’s record improved to 13-15. The Lady Panthers will meet defending champion Todd Central in the Thursday finals at 7 p.m.
