Sophomore Luke Rogers completed 17 of 26 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns Friday to lead the Logan County Cougars to a 42-7 win over an Allen County-Scottsville team which beat them last year. It was the first Class 4A district game of the season and ran Coach Todd Adler’s team’s record to 5-0.

The passing game was potent with freshman Liam Costello performing well in the fourth quarter after Adler pulled most of his starters to go against the over-matched Patriots.

Four different Cougars caught a touchdown pass. They were Elijah Sells, Isaac Christian, Travis Utterback, and Jeramiah Washington. Christian caught 5 passes for 59 yards and Washington four for 27. Pulling in 3 each were Sells for 89 yards and Cooper Parker for 34. Utterback made two receptions for 43 yards. Also catching a pass were Clarence Passmore, TySean Thoeczek, Carson Carlock, Alex Weaver and Christian Helle.

Helle had carried the ball 30 times the week before in an overtime game against Greenwood. This time he only rushed 12 times for 48 yards, but he made them count with 2 touchdowns.

Carlock was second in rushing with 13 yards on 2 totes. Also running the ball were Thomeczek, Parker, Rogers, Lane Bush and Owen Johns.

Caiden Kirby kicked all five extra points he tried and also punted beautifully. Freshman Keeton Wright took advantage of his getting the opportunity to kick, connecting on his only attempt.

Sells recovered 2 fumbles, and Damani Goodloe and Utterback each pulled in an interception.

AC-S didn’t run many offensive plays, so the Cougars didn’t have big numbers on defense. Freshman Joseph Mctire led the team in total tackles with 6, tackles for losses. He tied for solo tackles with 3 with Michael Hammonds and Christian, and in assisted tackles with 2 with Parker. Parker and Carlock each had 1.5 sacks.

Also getting a tackle, were Sells, Helle, Thomeczek, Goodloe, Jackson Kemplin, Maliq Ford, Lucas Cross and Blake Gipson.

The Cougars will entertain a much-improved Calloway County team in a district game Friday for homecoming. Coach Coby Lewis’ Lakers have not played a particularly strong schedule, but they have a 4-1 record, including outscoring district foe Warren East 58-36 last week.

Quarterback Matthew Briedwell has completed 49 of 94 pass attempts for 933 yards and 11 touchdowns. Logan Smith has rushed for 853 yards and 12 touchdowns on 77 attempts.

For Logan, Rogers has connected on 82 of his 122 pass attempts for 873 yards and 8 TDs. Helle has scored 10 touchdowns on 99 rushes for 504 yards. Thomeczek has caught 24 passes for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kirby is 12 for 12 kicking extra points.
