Homestanding Franklin-Simpson and Logan County are favored to win tonight’s opening round games of the 13th District Baseball Tournament following good seasons recorded by the two traditional regional contenders.
They had identical district seasons. Both went 5-1 in the district with the lone loss being to each other, both being by a single run on consecutive days, the Wildcat run coming in an extra inning.
The tiebreaker centered on their Kentucky High School Athletic Association RPIs. Coach Matthew Wilhite’s Wildcats (23-12 overall, 13-7 region) are rated second in the region behind number one Bowling Green. Coach Ethan Meguiar’s Cougars are rated fifth with an 18-16 record overall and 10-11 in the region
The number one Wildcats will play fourth-seeded Russellville (10-10 overall, 0-8 region, 0-6 district) at 5:30 tonight. The Wildcats beat Coach Seth Whittaker’s Panthers 10-0, 10-0 during the season.
In the second game tonight, the Cougars will entertain Todd Central. Meguiar’s team beat the Rebels twice, first by 1-0 and 15-1. That first game was a pitching jewel between Logan’s TySean Thomeczek and the Rebels’ Ty Jolly; both are sophomores. Thomeczek doubled in Lyndon Wilson, who had also doubled, for the game’s only run.
Thomeczek pitched three complete-game wins in district action, and classmate Jonas Hayes won two complete games while pitching a no-decision seven innings in the third game.
Logan will play Todd after the Panther game tonight. The championship game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday. All games are at LCHS.
