The Logan County Cougars recorded their highest ever track finish Saturday, capturing the runner-up spot in the Region I AA Championships at Paducah
Tilghman High School, trailing only the host team in the standings.
“We had great performances and things looked good in the beginning but we didn't score in some areas we have been doing so all year,” said Coach Greg
Howard. “We had a great game plan going in and I felt great about our chances. I figured it would be a duel between the two teams, and no one else came
within 40 points of our boys.”
Tilghman scored 166, Logan 107, Hopkinsville 60, Trigg County 48 and Webster County 46 to complete the top five of the nine teams.
In individual showings, Colton Spencer had what Howard calls “the greatest performance of the day as he beat two athletes from Tilghman in the 400M dash
and did so with the state's 4th ranked time.“ The 4 X 800M Relay team of Spencer, Noah Thomas, Levi Crossley and Sye Head finished in second place behind
Webster County. Their time will put them as the 5th fastest time in this Friday's meet. Spencer was also part of the 4 X 200M Relay team (Avrey Collier,
Dylan Cole, Spencer, Michael Sydnor) to a second place finish. They ran the second fastest time in the state behind Paducah Tilghman's state leading time
in the event, only edging the Cougars by less than half a second. Spencer also qualified for state in a fourth event, the 4X400M Relay along with Cole,
Head and Sydnor.
Collier, who has signed to run for Eastern Kentucky University, began the scoring for the Cougars by placing 2nd in the 100M and the 200M dashes. He
followed that up with a first place finish in the 110M hurdles and anchored a very strong relay team.
Head qualified in three events, the two relays and the 1600M run, in which he placed second. Also making state three times was Sydnor, including two
relays. “Michael Sydnor continues to excel in the triple jump and will be attempting to add to his impressive improvement this week at state. Michael
finished third in the triple and I can't wait to see what he does on the big stage,” Howard says.
Aaron Johnson, who will be on the track and football teams at Campbellsville University, qualified for state in the Discus.
Justin Rone qualified for state in the 110M hurdles by placing third Saturday and beating runners from other regions. He also scored points for the Cougars
in the 300M hurdles, the long jump, and the 4 X 100M Relay with Cole, Sydnor and Jerry Hendrix.
“Dylan Cole has certainly continued to get so much better in the sprint events by placing in the 200M Dash,” Howard said of the junior who is going to
state on two relay teams.
Noah Thomas ran strong in the 3200M Run by scoring third and in the same event Kaleb O'Dell placed 6th.
Claire Hopkins led the way for the girls as they fought their way to qualify in the state championships. Hopkins won her regional championship in the 300M
hurdles and was a vital part of the 4 X 200M and 4 X 400M relays (Hopkins, Jasmine Martin, Hayley Mayher, Kelsey Markham). Hayley Mayher was another Lady
Cougar to become a regional champion with her first place finish in the discus. Martin placed 4th in the 200M dash against stiff competition.
Howard notes, “Brittany Harper was in the middle of the competition in the 100M hurdles when she tripped and fell out of the race for first but picked
herself up and finished with pride and cheering by her teammates.”
“I can never say enough about the pride I have for these kids. They pour their heart and soul into what they do and they expect greatness every time out. I
was so proud watching them compete at such a high level and saddened when the meet was over,” Howard said. “These kids continue to impress us with not only
being great athletes but by being such a shining example of integrity and spirit.”
“I was also proud to see so many parents traveled to Paducah to support their kids! I hope if a parent of a young person reads this they would encourage
their child to come out and be a part of this team. In order to keep the quality of this team intact, we must recruit and encourage more of the younger
kids to get involved at an early age.”
