The Logan County Cougars won the Raider Twilight Run sponsored by Warren East at Ephram White Park in Warren County Saturday afternoon.
“This was the first meet for all of our runners to compete. Excitement was in the air and a large crowd showed up to watch what was billed as a shoot-out of top notch AAA teams Owensboro, Greenwood, and South Warren, and powerhouse Edmonson County,” says veteran LCHS cross country coach Greg Howard. “Our boys literally ran down the competition to win the championship while beating archrival Edmonson County along the way.”
At last year’s meet it was an Edmonson County runner passing two Logan runners within 100 yards of the finish line. Saturday, Colton Spencer and Noah Thomas made a mad dash in almost the same spot as last year to overtake an Edmonson County runner to seal the championship for the Cougars.
Sye Head led the way by placing first among 120 competitors in a time of 16:44.09. Spencer finished 14th (17:57.49), Thomas 15th (17:58.38), Cory Ford 18th (18:22.88), Levi Crossley 20th (18:29.99), Kaleb O'Dell 28th (18:52.98), Austin Rouse 48th (19:44.51), Blake Vanderpool 58th (20:16.92, Clint Baker 63rd (20:33.59), and Matthew Adair 80th (21:24.69).
“I am pleased where we are at this time, and I know we will continue to improve as our training progresses,” says Howard.
The Cougars are currently ranked fifth in the state and have their eyes set on being on the podium at the KHSAA State Championships on Nov. 10 in Lexington, their enthusiastic and hard-working coach says..
The Lady Cougars tested the waters in their first meet, coming up with some much improved performances. “I thought they ran better than expected, and I know they will make a great deal of improvement,” Howard says.
The Lady Cougars were led by Brielle Powell at 67th in 26:11.17, Miranda Cole 85th in 28:30.78, Addie Baldwin 86th (28:35.53), and Jasmine Martin 87th (28:44.33).
The younger runners also put the flats on for their first test as J.T. Cobb led the way in the 2K race, finishing 32nd (10:23.76), and Price Violette 70th (12:01). In the 3K race, Logan’s boys middle schoolers were led by Thomas Lyne at 5th of 99 (11:54.72), Riley Wharton 25th (12:40.94), Dean Heltsley 35th (13:31.82), and Gage Cousineau 53rd (14:28.74).
“I am so proud of the effort of all our runners and they continue to impress me with such great effort and pride in all that they do!” Howard continues “I hope we will continue to attract young runners to be a part of the Cougar running tradition. I ask everyone that gets a chance will come out and watch these kids run.”
Logan’s teams will next travel to Bowling Green's Kereiakes Park to take part in the Bowling Green Purple Striders Invitational.
