After winning only one softball game during the first month of the season, the Logan County Lady Cougars have won two in four days. They were vastly different encounters. Friday’s win was in a tournament and was by one run. Monday’s was a regular season encounter, and they romped by 16 runs.

The nail-biter came 8-7 over Glasgow in the 24-team Greenwood Border Battle in Warren County pvder the weekend. Logan built an 8-3 lead and then had to hold on for the one-run victory.

Shelby Milam was the starting and winning pitcher. She was rolling along until the final inning, but freshman Megan Ferguson came in to relieve her and get the save. Milam threw strikes on 55 of her 98 pitches. Ferguson faced four batters and threw strikes on 10 of her 16 pitches.

Freshman Cierra Johnson tripled among her two hits. Victoria Cates and Jonique Smith also had 2 hits each. Maddie Abbott, Molly Wharton and Sierra Morrow contributed a hit each. Johnson and Smith each drove in 3 runs and Morrow had an RBI. Megan Griggs was hit by a pitch while Shelby Browning and Wharton reached on Glasgow errors.

Bailey Alexander and Kelsey Greer each tripled and doubled for the Lady Scotties. Ashley Smith added a trio of singles. Eighth grader McKenna Wood pitched for Coach Steven Murphy’s team and also had two hits.

Smith was the slugging star of the 16-0 win over Hopkinsville on the road Monday. The senior centerfielder hit a pair of home runs, one of them a grand slam. Griggs also homered among her two hits.  Abbott, Cates, Browning and Morrow added doubles. Wharton and Rachel Barnett singled.  Smith had 5 RBIs, Griggs and Browning 3 each, Barnett 2, and Rebecca Dezarn and Abbott 1 each. Additionally, Cates, Browning, Dezarn and Johnson reached on errors, and Johnson stole a base. Milam hurled a 2-hitter against Coach Anthony Holloway’s Lady Tigers.

Coach Michael Crawford’s Lady Cougars hope to add another win to the total Tuesday when they play Coach Greg Meacham’s young Lady Panthers at Russellville. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30.
