Franklin-Simpson loaded the bases on walks and then scored on an infield error to take a 2-1, 9-inning win over the visiting Russellville Panthers Tuesday night.
The regulation seven innings ended in a 1-1 tie behind the pitching of Panther Jacob Procter, who gave up only one run on three hits and three walks in seven innings. Zach Denney pitched the eighth inning and into the ninth, but the usually accurate Denney walked six of the eleven batters he faced.
Denney pitched out of a jam in the eighth inning. He walked three batters but got a pair of comebackers to the mound to keep the Wildcats from scoring. In the bottom half of the ninth, he walked the number seven and eight hitters, but he stopped the lead runner from scoring on a fielder’s choice. Then after walking a third batter, he induced a ground ball but it was booted to end the game.
The Panthers scored their run to start the game when Barrett Croslin reached on an infield error and scored on Corey Wright’s double. Tyler Hall walked in that first inning, but he and Wright were stranded.
Coach Greg Shelton’s team didn’t have another baserunner until Travis Kennedy walked with one out in the fifth inning. Wright walked in the sixth but he was quickly erased on a double play. Procter singled with an out in the seventh, but the Wildcats then struck out five straight Panthers and seven of the final eight.
Russellville’s record fell to 11-12, including 1-4 in the district. Coach Craig Delk’s Cats moved to 16-8 overall and 5-0 in the district.
