Shelby Milam pitched a one-run jewel Monday as the Logan County Lady Cougars beat a good Hart County team 2-1 on the road. She gave up five hits and survived five errors to hold the Lady Raiders, who had won 19 games including five of their last six, to that single run. She struck out nine.
Victoria Cates doubled in both runs in the fifth inning after trailing 1-0 since the third inning. Maddie Abbott and Rebecca Dezarn also doubled and each of them singled, too. Also getting hits for the Lady Cougars were freshman Sierra Morrow and eighth grader Tristan Hales.
Abbott and Jonique Smith both walked while Shelby Browning reached on a Hart County error. Abbott and Kayla Hazel each stole a base.
Hart County’s Amelia Cottrell also pitched a five-hitter for Coach Tim Highbaugh’s team. Alexis Milby doubled and Morgan Atwell had two hits. Both of them also reached on errors.
Logan (5-20) had Hart County’s number last year, too. Even though the Lady Raiders won 20 games in 2012, Logan beat them 10-0 and 7-6 near season’s end. The 2013 teams are scheduled to play a rematch at LCHS next Monday.
Coach Michael Crawford said, “We played together and overcame mistakes and found a way to get the job done.”
On Tuesday the Lady Cougars played another close game, losing 2-0 to district rival Todd Central. Logan managed only three hits off Todd pitcher Kayla Watkins with Cates getting two of them and Cierra Johnson the other. Megan Griggs, Dezarn and Johnson reached on errors, and Browning was hit by a pitch.
Makayla Bilyeu, Natalie Perry and Shelby Dorsey played big roles in producing the runs for Coach Calvin Head’s team.
Logan and Todd will meet again in the 13th District Tournament in the 2-3 slot.
