Cougar track 2nd in region to state champ

Half a year after many of them ran on the cross country team which won the regional cross country team for the second straight year, the Logan County Cougars finished as regional runner-up for the second straight season Saturday.

The only team to beat them was defending state champion Paducah Tilghman. The Cougars finished 25 points ahead of third place Hopkinsville and 56 better than fourth place Webster County.

Coach Greg Howard, who has built regional and state powers in both cross country and track, offered the following comments for The Logan Journal:

“Our boys and girls put together another day of great effort as they competed in the Region I AA Championships held Saturday on the campus of Paducah Tilghman High School. I’m excited that our team stuck to the game plan and gave every effort as we attempted to win our school’s first ever regional championship in track and field. Regardless of the outcome, I can honestly say we put together an effort that in most cases would win. Tilghman was better than the rest of us on Saturday.

“I knew things would be exciting a month ago when I approached some of our athletes and asked them to do an activity that they hadn’t attempted in their track careers. Several of our athletes stepped up and said, “whatever you need me to do coach,” and that’s exactly what they did. They sacrificed for their team, taking on a daunting task of not only learning a new skill in a short time frame, but all the while doing so at a high level. Korey Jaynes and Taylor Rittenberry stand out as they sacrificed the most when I asked Taylor to compete in the 300M hurdles and Korey in the 110M hurdles. Hard skills to learn but both young men dedicated themselves to start working on their event immediately. Their effort was truly a blessing and an example of “team spirit” and accepting the idea of ‘TEAM over ‘self’!

The boys for the second year in a row finished as Class AA Region I Runner-ups. To many it sounds like second place, but it is far more reaching than that. It was a second place finish to a powerful, multi-time state champion, and defending state champion in Paducah Tilghman. We had our chances and never took full advantage of them and just came up short.
When you see sad faces and young men crying in defeat, you know it meant something to them. I will say this, I’ve seen many athletes compete over a long career and what I saw Saturday was a “Championship Effort” by our kids, one that I will never forget!

“On the girls side, the short-handed Lady Cougars manned up and gave all they had with just four girls competing. Hayley Mayher will once again compete in the State Championships this week at the University of Louisville. Hayley garnered a second place finish in the discus and teammate Jasmine Martin will join Mayher at stat, competing in the 100M and 200M dashes. Freshman Bethany Bush finished just outside the scoring as she competed in both the discus and the shot while fellow freshman Jacqueline Belcher ran the 1600M run.

“The boys were strong in many areas as they took home first place finishes in the 4 X 800M Relay (Sye Head, Levi Crossley, Noah Thomas, Colton Spencer) and Spencer was also regional champion in the 400M dash. Justin Rone will be competing in all four of his events at state (110M hurdles, 300M hurdles, High Jump, Long jump).

“I am Blessed to have witnessed so many great accomplishments of these athletes, truly Blessed!” Howard concludes.

The following young men will compete at state this week.
