The Hart County softball team has a 20-11 record this season, but two of those losses are to the Logan County Lady Cougars. The second of those defeats came at LCHS Monday.
Shelby Milam pitched a five-hit shutout for the win. Three of those hits were by junior Jessica Dennis, including a double. Amelia Cottrell took the loss on the mound.
Freshman Megan Ferguson, the Lady Cougars’ other pitcher, played a big role in the win. She seldom bats for the varsity when she’s not pitching, but given the chance in this game, she banged out three hits, including a double, and also stole a base. Senior Megan Griggs also doubled while Sierra Morrow, Victoria Cates, Shelby Browning and Jonique Smith singled. Browning and Griggs each had a pair of RBIs for Coach Michael Crawford’s team.
Logan piled up four runs in the first inning. Maddie Abbott walked before freshman shortstop Morrow hit a ball that the third baseman booted. She went to second and Abbott scored. After an out and a stolen base by Morrow, Browning hit a fielder’s choice. The Lady Raiders tried to get Morrow out at home, but she scored. Browning stole second, Smith walked, and Griggs powered a two-run double. Ferguson singled but she and Griggs were stranded.
The Lady Cougars graciously shared their evening with the LCHS track teams. Since the Logan track is no longer usable for home meets, a Senior Night couldn’t be held there, so Coach Greg Howard’s 18 track seniors were honored between softball games.
